WEBVTT

01:10.470 --> 01:12.930
Eye movement detected.

01:27.790 --> 01:31.550
What is 2 plus 2?

01:33.090 --> 01:34.090
Incorrect.

01:35.650 --> 01:36.530
Cognition assessment.

01:37.810 --> 01:39.330
What is 2 plus 2?

01:40.430 --> 01:40.930
Incorrect.

01:40.930 --> 01:44.650
You have been in a
medically induced coma.

01:46.870 --> 01:48.850
You may experience memory loss,

01:49.530 --> 01:50.570
difficulty speaking.

01:54.350 --> 01:55.730
Body movement detected.

01:57.050 --> 01:59.970
For your own safety, please
return to the medical platform.

02:08.930 --> 02:13.390
Please remember, muscle function
has not yet been restored.

02:19.690 --> 02:20.390
No.

02:28.170 --> 02:29.570
People!

02:30.830 --> 02:31.450
Hello!

02:45.210 --> 02:46.610
Oh.

03:16.790 --> 03:18.450
Where am I?

04:06.190 --> 04:10.050
Why is there an atomic resolution
scanning electron microscope?

04:10.670 --> 04:12.490
Why do I know that?

04:13.490 --> 04:14.490
Am I smart?

04:51.210 --> 04:51.410
Hello?

04:52.950 --> 04:55.210
Please record video diary. No.

04:57.210 --> 04:58.090
in charge?

04:59.090 --> 05:01.070
The captain.

05:01.330 --> 05:03.550
Captain Yao Li-Jie. Deceased.

05:03.730 --> 05:07.110
Yeah. Where are
the living people?

05:08.130 --> 05:09.830
Dr. Ryland Grace.

05:11.050 --> 05:12.230
End of manifest.

05:14.870 --> 05:19.250
I can't be the only
person here, right?

05:20.150 --> 05:21.130
Pilot detected.

05:21.350 --> 05:23.690
No, no, no, not the pilot.

05:24.830 --> 05:26.750
Uh, call, uh, Houston.

05:26.750 --> 05:28.890
Unknown command.

05:29.390 --> 05:31.810
Operation go home in effect.

05:32.330 --> 05:33.210
Invalid operation.

05:34.610 --> 05:35.770
That's the sun!

05:36.850 --> 05:37.610
There it is.

05:37.930 --> 05:40.110
So, what are we
like Neptune-ish?

05:41.850 --> 05:44.710
Let's crank up the
radio and call Earth.

05:44.970 --> 05:46.570
Current transmission
time to Earth

05:46.610 --> 05:51.390
is 11 years, 10 months,
14 days and 6 hours.

05:52.190 --> 05:54.790
No. Nope. You're wrong.

05:54.790 --> 05:57.210
I need a map.

05:58.390 --> 05:59.050
Oh.

06:00.610 --> 06:03.650
That's really far.

06:15.550 --> 06:17.190
That's not our sun.

06:20.170 --> 06:23.450
That's not our sun.

06:36.230 --> 06:39.090
Where is the fuel?

06:44.070 --> 06:45.470
Wait.

07:20.170 --> 07:25.210
We are just minutes away from the
flyby through the Petrova line near Venus.

07:25.670 --> 07:27.890
So, what can you tell us
about the ArcLight probe?

07:28.570 --> 07:31.010
What do we expect to find?

07:32.390 --> 07:35.550
The image we see will be coming
from the onboard microscope.

07:39.950 --> 07:41.510
Oh! Oh my God!

07:46.170 --> 07:47.710
Sorry, I have to go now.

07:50.170 --> 07:54.170
Oh my God!

07:57.850 --> 08:01.650
Sound waves are physical

08:02.790 --> 08:05.550
and at different frequencies

08:07.250 --> 08:10.490
they make different patterns.

08:11.350 --> 08:11.670
Patterns.

08:11.790 --> 08:13.110
They make different patterns.

08:13.210 --> 08:14.190
Olivia, can you help me out?

08:14.530 --> 08:14.850
Try going.

08:14.910 --> 08:15.610
There we go.

08:16.610 --> 08:17.290
Whoa!

08:19.070 --> 08:19.670
Yeah?

08:20.370 --> 08:21.590
Are they really eating the sun?

08:22.310 --> 08:23.910
The space dots?

08:24.150 --> 08:25.710
That is a great
question, uh, Rekha.

08:26.350 --> 08:29.390
I'd be curious what your
parents think about that?

08:29.490 --> 08:31.510
I'm not sure it
should come from me.

08:31.590 --> 08:34.730
Hey, who wants to
play a game of...

08:34.730 --> 08:35.690
The beanbag is lava!

08:36.290 --> 08:38.570
Lava! Lava! Lava!

08:38.570 --> 08:41.170
What is the speed
of light, Olivia?

08:42.350 --> 08:44.090
Uh... It's melting
your hands, Olivia!

08:44.090 --> 08:46.890
186,000 miles per second!

08:47.130 --> 08:48.870
Oh! Give her a
round of applause.

08:49.050 --> 08:50.210
That is awesome!

08:50.990 --> 08:53.290
What is the Petrova line?

08:53.870 --> 08:55.150
Ha ha ha! Pass!

08:55.650 --> 08:56.670
You can't pass.

08:58.250 --> 09:02.010
Lava! Lava! Lava!

09:02.070 --> 09:03.170
Two years ago,

09:04.710 --> 09:08.350
a radio telescope enthusiast
named Irina Petrova,

09:09.530 --> 09:12.190
she noticed that there was
a streak of infrared light

09:12.190 --> 09:14.170
from the sun to Venus.

09:14.870 --> 09:17.370
And that is now known
as the Petrova line.

09:17.610 --> 09:18.390
That's it.

09:18.470 --> 09:19.650
That's the dots?

09:20.170 --> 09:21.030
They think so.

09:21.650 --> 09:22.110
What dots?

09:25.970 --> 09:26.890
These dots.

09:28.230 --> 09:30.050
They sent a probe up
to the Petrova line,

09:30.070 --> 09:31.810
and this is what they found.

09:33.510 --> 09:35.250
Are they eating the sun?

09:36.990 --> 09:40.110
They seem to be dimming the sun

09:40.270 --> 09:43.110
a tiny, teeny, weeny little bit.

09:44.090 --> 09:45.170
So no big whoop.

09:45.450 --> 09:46.710
It's a small whoop.

09:47.330 --> 09:48.690
It's a small to medium whoop.

09:48.690 --> 09:52.650
Over the next 30
years, the Earth could

09:53.310 --> 09:55.690
cool maybe 10 to

09:57.110 --> 09:58.110
15 degrees.

09:59.610 --> 10:00.530
So it is a big whoop.

10:00.930 --> 10:03.090
I heard that all
the crops will die,

10:03.090 --> 10:04.530
die, the economy will free fall,

10:04.530 --> 10:06.570
and half the Earth
will die of starvation.

10:08.270 --> 10:09.850
We're all gonna die.

10:10.650 --> 10:11.250
Yeah, it's true.

10:11.570 --> 10:12.710
You're forgetting something.

10:12.990 --> 10:16.030
Guys, guys, that's if
that were to happen, right?

10:16.410 --> 10:17.890
They're gonna figure this out.

10:17.890 --> 10:21.870
Right now, the best
minds in the entire world

10:22.890 --> 10:23.890
are on it.

10:38.315 --> 10:45.127
Well, I woke up Sunday morning with no
way to hold my head and it didn't hurt.

10:48.890 --> 10:50.390
Good morning, Dr. Grace.

10:52.170 --> 10:53.670
I'm up.

11:30.847 --> 11:37.213
Wishing, Lord,
that I was stoned.

11:37.233 --> 11:48.985
Cause there's something in a
Sunday that makes a body feel alone.

11:49.005 --> 11:54.730
And there's nothing
short of dying.

11:54.751 --> 11:57.293
Half as lonesome as it sounds.

12:00.530 --> 12:09.663
On the sleeping city side
walls Sunday morning coming down

12:32.590 --> 12:33.610
Knock, knock.

12:36.030 --> 12:36.630
Who's there?

12:37.390 --> 12:37.930
Not good at jokes.

12:38.430 --> 12:39.210
Not good at jokes, who?

12:43.350 --> 12:44.390
Dr. Grace.

12:46.950 --> 12:51.070
Maybe. Eva Stratt, I'm with the
Petrova task force. I need your help.

12:52.230 --> 12:53.790
Me. Did you write this?

12:57.210 --> 13:00.970
Oh. I'm interested in
this section here, page 31.

13:01.650 --> 13:05.530
The Goldilocks Zone is for idiots,
why everyone is wrong about life.

13:06.170 --> 13:07.490
That was a long time ago.

13:07.970 --> 13:08.890
Did you stand by what you wrote?

13:09.070 --> 13:11.570
I was fired for
standing by what I wrote.

13:11.910 --> 13:15.290
You were fired for calling the
leading scholar in your field a

13:15.290 --> 13:19.010
a staggering waste of carbon at
the UNESCO conference in Denmark?

13:19.010 --> 13:20.610
You-- You heard about that, huh?

13:21.450 --> 13:26.210
Look, I don't know what
this is, but, uh, I think, uh

13:26.210 --> 13:27.350
I'm not su-- That's lava.

13:27.950 --> 13:28.990
It's not. Okay.

13:30.090 --> 13:32.030
No one in your field wants
anything to do with you

13:32.030 --> 13:34.730
because you refuse to back
down from a very unpopular view,

13:34.730 --> 13:36.630
and I can give you a chance
to prove them all wrong.

13:36.630 --> 13:38.610
Uh, that's uh--
Kevin, no running.

13:38.730 --> 13:39.210
I'm not.

13:40.190 --> 13:42.420
Joke's on them because
I don't even care, so...

13:44.070 --> 13:45.850
I think you do care.

13:45.930 --> 13:47.570
You're just running away
because you're scared.

13:48.070 --> 13:48.350
No, I'm not.

13:50.910 --> 13:54.170
Do you still believe water is
unnecessary for life to evolve?

13:55.690 --> 13:59.470
Look, there is nothing magical
about hydrogen and oxygen.

13:59.990 --> 14:02.070
Water is required for
life on Earth, sure,

14:02.170 --> 14:04.990
but a completely different planet might
have completely different conditions.

14:05.090 --> 14:06.930
I don't know why that
makes me such a nut.

14:07.070 --> 14:08.310
I need you to come with us.

14:10.070 --> 14:11.920
Sorry, I didn't
catch your name Carl.

14:12.570 --> 14:13.390
Carl, hi.

14:13.550 --> 14:14.150
Dr. Grace,

14:14.450 --> 14:16.090
Petrova line samples
splashed down last night.

14:16.130 --> 14:18.350
I want you to tell me what
they are, how they work.

14:19.050 --> 14:21.550
I am a teacher at
Grover Cleveland Middle.

14:21.930 --> 14:23.650
You have a doctorate
in molecular biology.

14:23.810 --> 14:25.430
And I ride a bike to work,

14:25.870 --> 14:27.950
and it's not for exercise,

14:28.030 --> 14:30.430
so I'm sure there are
thousands of other people...

14:30.430 --> 14:31.570
It survives on the
surface of the sun.

14:32.150 --> 14:33.950
Does that sound like a
water-based life form to you?

14:41.430 --> 14:43.150
The sun's really
dying, isn't it?

14:43.274 --> 14:43.394
Yeah.

14:44.930 --> 14:45.410
Yeah.

14:48.070 --> 14:51.190
Is all of this necessary?

14:52.950 --> 14:53.430
Yes.

14:54.470 --> 14:56.150
Please analyze
the Petrova sample.

14:58.490 --> 14:59.410
Just one thing.

14:59.490 --> 15:01.010
The entire room is
filled with argon.

15:01.170 --> 15:02.430
Just try not to rip your suit.

15:06.870 --> 15:08.330
Am I expendable?

15:08.570 --> 15:09.570
Is that what you want me?

15:09.570 --> 15:11.350
That's not the only reason.

15:12.070 --> 15:13.850
It's almost like you
don't care if I die.

15:18.170 --> 15:19.950
Hold on. You have
to talk about it?

15:21.010 --> 15:25.570
Consensus here is that it would
be preferable if you did not die.

15:27.350 --> 15:28.530
Thanks guys.

15:35.947 --> 15:36.148
Oh.

15:42.170 --> 15:43.150
to Earth.

15:58.690 --> 15:59.830
Are they alive?

16:01.050 --> 16:02.010
They're moving.

16:02.630 --> 16:03.530
So they're alive.

16:04.410 --> 16:07.590
Yes, they're moving, but
that could be for many reasons.

16:07.890 --> 16:08.850
What are they made of?

16:09.130 --> 16:13.610
It's going to take a long time. It took like
200 years to figure out how bacteria work.

16:13.610 --> 16:14.550
Please do it faster.

16:17.290 --> 16:19.550
I'm just going through the
whole light spectrum here.

16:21.010 --> 16:22.010
Wow!

16:24.230 --> 16:25.390
You're not going
to believe this.

16:28.810 --> 16:29.630
Nothing happened.

16:34.070 --> 16:37.390
I can't see into these

16:39.370 --> 16:40.030
Amazing.

16:41.350 --> 16:45.150
microwaves, gamma rays,
visible light. Nothing!

16:48.050 --> 16:55.630
I've been dying
to do this all day.

17:06.890 --> 17:08.150
It's a cell.

17:08.420 --> 17:10.590
It's a cell... Wake
up! It's a cell!

17:11.390 --> 17:13.410
It's a tiny alien cell.

17:13.670 --> 17:14.410
You guys!

17:14.410 --> 17:15.130
Applause.

17:15.130 --> 17:23.150
Guys! This is first contact!
It's life! Outside of the...

17:23.150 --> 17:23.590
Uh-oh.

17:24.690 --> 17:26.150
Oh, it died.

17:27.190 --> 17:27.550
What?

17:28.350 --> 17:30.090
This is great news.

17:30.350 --> 17:32.490
Now we can find out
what they're made of.

17:34.690 --> 17:36.410
You guys fired up?

17:39.910 --> 17:40.130
Yes!

17:40.258 --> 17:40.739
Yes!

17:41.870 --> 17:42.610
Right?

17:43.610 --> 17:45.070
Carbon.

17:46.406 --> 17:47.168
Oxygen.

17:50.270 --> 17:50.950
Hydrogen.

17:52.410 --> 17:52.690
Oh.

18:07.816 --> 18:08.577
It's made.

18:09.790 --> 18:12.590
It's made...

18:14.490 --> 18:16.250
of water.

18:26.170 --> 18:27.170
Alright.

18:30.330 --> 18:38.070
Sorry if I overreacted in there. Just, uh, realizing
I was wrong about the only original idea I ever had.

18:38.310 --> 18:39.450
Yeah, what else did you learn?

18:40.210 --> 18:45.110
They give off infrared light when they move.
Like so much, I don't know how they store

18:45.110 --> 18:51.050
store all that energy. But their wavelength
is exactly the Petrova frequency.

18:51.290 --> 18:52.630
Their light is how they move.

18:52.830 --> 18:58.470
Yeah, they consume the sun's energy and then they
expel it for propulsion. They toot to scoot, basically.

19:00.670 --> 19:01.990
Why did it go to Venus?

19:04.270 --> 19:05.310
I don't know.

19:07.290 --> 19:09.690
Okay, we'll tell you. What?

19:09.690 --> 19:15.920
I have 347 other biologists in 21 countries
mobilizing as we speak, so thank you for your help.

19:16.070 --> 19:17.210
I'm glad you didn't die.

19:17.210 --> 19:18.630
Let's pack this up!

19:23.010 --> 19:23.810
That's it?!

19:25.110 --> 19:25.570
That's it, Carl?

19:25.850 --> 19:26.430
Talk to her.

19:26.910 --> 19:28.090
You're taking all this stuff?

19:28.390 --> 19:31.890
At the school you said there were thousands
of people more qualified than you, so...

19:31.890 --> 19:32.770
I was being modest.

19:32.990 --> 19:36.970
I don't need modest. I need people who think they're
right when everyone else thinks they're wrong.

19:36.970 --> 19:38.710
I need people who
piss other people off.

19:38.710 --> 19:39.550
That's me!

19:39.830 --> 19:40.650
Do you want to
be on our project?

19:42.070 --> 19:47.730
If you... If you think I can help,
then... Just answer the question.

19:48.970 --> 19:50.910
I want to help the world.

19:51.010 --> 19:52.030
I left you three dots.

19:52.950 --> 19:53.990
Just three, huh?

19:54.210 --> 19:54.970
Plus the one you killed.

19:56.430 --> 19:57.350
I would take the three.

20:00.230 --> 20:01.690
Yes? I'll take the dots.

20:02.090 --> 20:03.210
Get to work, Dr. Grace.

20:04.690 --> 20:07.450
The world is counting on you.

21:15.290 --> 21:15.730
Hey, Carl?

21:17.750 --> 21:18.450
This is Carl.

21:19.130 --> 21:23.110
Imagine... for a second that
you're an interstellar microorganism.

21:23.710 --> 21:24.490
I'm not doing that.

21:26.790 --> 21:28.530
Why would you leave
the Sun and go to Venus?

21:29.710 --> 21:32.330
Why not stop at
Mercury, it's closer?

21:33.950 --> 21:34.990
Maybe fresh air?

21:35.750 --> 21:37.330
Venus's atmosphere
is mostly CO2.

21:37.570 --> 21:39.010
Maybe that's fresh air to them.

21:39.350 --> 21:40.910
You don't know what doing
a little space dust like?

21:46.530 --> 21:47.270
Hey Carl,

21:48.270 --> 21:49.690
do we have an expense account?

21:49.920 --> 21:51.190
We don't.

21:56.270 --> 21:57.110
But, I do.

22:16.788 --> 22:20.733
Thank you.

22:39.770 --> 22:41.170
Thank you.

22:41.510 --> 22:42.390
Do you have a coupon?

22:42.770 --> 22:44.410
We don't need a coupon.
We're the government.

22:44.810 --> 22:45.410
Which government?

22:46.090 --> 22:46.650
All of them.

22:49.230 --> 22:50.870
So this box is Venus?

22:51.010 --> 22:51.990
The box is Venus.

22:52.570 --> 22:56.190
It's set to emit the same infrared
light frequency as Venus's CO2 atmosphere.

22:56.570 --> 22:58.770
So if the dots move when
you turn the lights on,

22:59.070 --> 23:01.050
that means they're
looking for CO2.

23:01.190 --> 23:02.950
Thus proving the
Carl hypothesis.

23:03.930 --> 23:04.230
Sick.

23:08.490 --> 23:10.530
All right, you ready?

23:15.350 --> 23:15.710
Uh-oh.

23:17.030 --> 23:17.710
Why are you saying, uh-oh?

23:18.370 --> 23:20.130
The astrophage
moved off the slide.

23:21.050 --> 23:21.250
Huh?

23:21.790 --> 23:22.630
We lost them.

23:23.410 --> 23:25.070
What do you mean we
lost them? Go get them.

23:26.110 --> 23:28.670
If I open the door and the
light, they're gonna escape

23:28.730 --> 23:30.690
and then we'll lose them forever.
At least now they're in the box.

23:31.050 --> 23:32.310
So then just turn
the lights off.

23:32.410 --> 23:34.470
They'll still be light.
It's got to be total darkness.

23:34.470 --> 23:42.470
Okay, so just put
this box in another box.

23:58.650 --> 24:00.090
Go ahead and close it over.

24:01.090 --> 24:06.310
I can hear you.

24:07.930 --> 24:10.250
Entering phase two.

24:16.090 --> 24:16.910
I'm in.

24:20.170 --> 24:25.190
Please report over.

24:28.070 --> 24:28.450
There's one.

24:30.590 --> 24:31.550
There's two!

24:32.270 --> 24:34.770
Come on, get the third one.

24:36.310 --> 24:39.370
Got sample three. The three
musketeers - the three stooges.

24:44.710 --> 24:45.390
What?

24:45.790 --> 24:46.470
What?

24:47.630 --> 24:48.830
Are you sitting down?

24:49.410 --> 24:50.150
No, I'm standing up.

24:50.150 --> 24:51.190
I'm standing like a grown man.

24:51.930 --> 24:52.710
'Cause there's a fourth.

24:54.490 --> 24:54.810
What?

24:57.450 --> 24:58.810
We're fathers, Carl.

25:02.030 --> 25:03.290
Now I'm sitting down.

25:07.190 --> 25:07.870
Stop.

25:09.010 --> 25:09.810
Carl and I made a baby.

25:11.350 --> 25:12.030
What?

25:12.750 --> 25:14.630
We figured out how
astrophage breeds.

25:15.110 --> 25:16.170
Don't move.

25:19.230 --> 25:20.030
What's up?

25:23.210 --> 25:27.090
Carl. Strat said she was sending
jets. I thought you meant like a PJ.

25:27.190 --> 25:27.850
I thought you did.

25:27.990 --> 25:28.250
I know.

25:29.190 --> 25:29.990
Take this.

25:31.390 --> 25:34.730
It's been a long time since I've taken a pill
from a stranger without knowing what it was.

25:49.350 --> 25:51.290
Dr. Grace, how was your flight?

25:56.750 --> 25:57.730
Where are we?

25:57.830 --> 25:58.430
The ocean.

25:58.930 --> 26:01.150
The astrophage reproduction,
can you do it at scale?

26:01.150 --> 26:02.450
Oh, in theory.

26:03.350 --> 26:06.870
You just get a bunch of elbow
shaped pipe, put sunlight in one end.

26:07.210 --> 26:08.410
Excuse me for a second.

26:09.070 --> 26:09.890
Write it down.

26:11.750 --> 26:13.990
And IR line CO2 in the other.

26:15.270 --> 26:17.150
Repeat. Anything else
you need for this?

26:17.150 --> 26:17.370
Just some water.

26:17.490 --> 26:19.310
he gave me a pill and
it's still in my throat.

26:19.610 --> 26:20.670
Two venti coffees?

26:20.950 --> 26:21.870
Thank you so much.

26:21.990 --> 26:22.530
Water for him.

26:22.530 --> 26:22.890
Or coffee.

26:23.810 --> 26:24.810
I need both.

26:25.090 --> 26:25.630
Or not.

26:26.130 --> 26:29.750
Okay, so this is kind of a tough room.
So don't take it personally. I don't

26:29.750 --> 26:30.690
I don't need anything fancy.

26:30.910 --> 26:32.990
As long as there's a bed
and a shower, I'm good.

26:38.350 --> 26:39.390
I can't.

26:40.790 --> 26:41.750
You're doing great.

26:42.830 --> 26:45.970
Everyone, this is Dr. Rylan
Grace from the United States.

26:46.170 --> 26:47.150
Please go here.

26:47.210 --> 26:47.730
Thank you.

26:48.070 --> 26:50.910
And he figured out
how to breed astrophage.

26:56.770 --> 26:58.010
How did you do it?

26:58.010 --> 26:59.870
How long does the process take?

27:00.190 --> 27:02.410
Was it reproduced by
mitosis or meiosis?

27:02.530 --> 27:03.750
What is the incubation period?

27:08.830 --> 27:11.690
Carl and I made a mini
venus out of a plywood box.

27:12.290 --> 27:16.910
And as soon as the samples recognized
the spectral signature of CO2,

27:18.010 --> 27:19.090
they were...

27:20.170 --> 27:21.810
Like whoomp, there it is.

27:22.050 --> 27:23.130
Okay, Whoomp, there it is.

27:23.130 --> 27:23.870
you can sit down.

27:24.131 --> 27:24.912
You can sit down in this chair.

27:24.930 --> 27:27.430
While your experiment
was crude and clumsy,

27:27.670 --> 27:30.110
our scientists have
replicated his results.

27:32.450 --> 27:34.890
Sorry, how did you
see, how did you?

27:34.950 --> 27:36.790
We estimate an
eight-day doubling time

27:36.790 --> 27:37.970
under optimal conditions.

27:38.490 --> 27:39.550
Dr. Grace is right.

27:40.010 --> 27:41.990
Oh. It is the CO2.

27:42.110 --> 27:43.270
That's why they're
going to Venus.

27:43.430 --> 27:44.750
you say it for everyone?

27:44.770 --> 27:45.890
That's why they're
going to Venus.

27:46.270 --> 27:49.470
So that's why they're
going to Venus,

27:49.470 --> 27:51.330
Venus, is what
Dr. Grace wants to say?

27:51.470 --> 27:52.370
They're going to breathe.

27:53.350 --> 27:54.810
Whoomp, there it is.

27:56.210 --> 27:58.010
I really like him.

27:58.610 --> 28:00.530
How long to make two
million kilograms?

28:00.970 --> 28:01.670
Two million?

28:04.130 --> 28:08.850
Two million is... Why on Earth

28:08.850 --> 28:10.730
would you need that
much astrophage?

28:11.090 --> 28:12.110
Nobody told him?

28:13.250 --> 28:15.130
He has no clearance.

28:15.130 --> 28:15.870
Stand up, Dr. Grace.

28:16.470 --> 28:17.030
Clearance?

28:17.230 --> 28:17.970
Stand up.

28:19.470 --> 28:21.330
I hereby grant you
top secret clearance

28:21.330 --> 28:23.710
to all information pertaining
to Project Hail Mary.

28:25.210 --> 28:26.330
What's Project Hail Mary?

28:28.670 --> 28:29.390
All right.

28:32.990 --> 28:34.870
The sun is not the
only star dying.

28:35.450 --> 28:37.650
There is a clear
pattern of infection.

28:37.950 --> 28:41.030
Every star was infected
by its neighbor except one.

28:42.650 --> 28:45.010
Tau Ceti, that's right,
11.9 light years away.

28:45.090 --> 28:46.870
It is uninfected
despite being well

28:46.870 --> 28:48.250
within the cluster
of infected stars.

28:48.810 --> 28:49.150
Why?

28:49.830 --> 28:50.730
Why? Tell him.

28:50.890 --> 28:52.450
We don't know.

28:52.650 --> 28:54.910
Which is why we
decided to build a ship

28:54.910 --> 28:56.590
ship to go there and find out.

28:57.110 --> 28:58.450
It's 11.9 light years away.

28:58.490 --> 29:00.210
You can't just build
an interstellar ship.

29:00.670 --> 29:01.390
Oh, yeah, we can.

29:01.850 --> 29:03.390
The ship is not
really the problem.

29:03.930 --> 29:06.770
The energy required to
power the ship is the problem.

29:06.990 --> 29:08.250
It was the problem.

29:08.570 --> 29:09.310
Weep, weep.

29:10.510 --> 29:11.970
The astrophage is the fuel.

29:12.250 --> 29:14.290
Provided we can
make enough of it.

29:14.290 --> 29:16.670
And for that, we
need you, my friend.

29:19.190 --> 29:19.750
Me?

29:20.670 --> 29:23.630
Ooh. Those little guys
store a lot of energy.

29:24.210 --> 29:26.590
One mistake in that much
astrophage could vaporize

29:27.370 --> 29:27.930
California.

29:28.370 --> 29:30.510
That's true, which is
why you now live on a boat

29:30.510 --> 29:32.090
boat in the middle of
the ocean in Gainesville.

29:33.090 --> 29:34.230
I live on the boat?

29:34.410 --> 29:34.870
You do.

29:35.770 --> 29:37.770
So you wanna build a
near light speed spaceship,

29:38.330 --> 29:40.750
have it travel further
than any human-made object

29:40.750 --> 29:43.650
has ever traveled,
and visit a star just to

29:44.770 --> 29:46.630
see what's up? Yeah.

29:47.210 --> 29:47.910
And then what?

29:47.910 --> 29:50.250
There won't be enough
fuel for a round trip,

29:50.710 --> 29:53.470
so they send their findings
back to Earth on probes.

29:56.450 --> 29:58.290
And the astronauts

30:01.570 --> 30:02.790
die in space?

30:03.330 --> 30:03.910
Yes.

30:07.070 --> 30:07.750
Space.

30:11.450 --> 30:14.650
Any other plans you thought of?

30:14.650 --> 30:17.210
Anything else? Anything
else you're kicking around?

30:17.210 --> 30:19.590
There are infinite
possibilities.

30:20.170 --> 30:22.750
For this to go wrong, it
almost certainly won't work.

30:22.910 --> 30:25.590
It's what you Americans
would call a long shot.

30:26.170 --> 30:26.510
Hail Mary.

30:28.010 --> 30:28.890
I get it.

30:29.310 --> 30:32.210
The alternative is
to just do nothing.

30:33.330 --> 30:35.690
And to starve and
to kill each other

30:35.690 --> 30:37.990
and watch everything on
this planet go extinct,

30:38.370 --> 30:38.970
including us.

30:41.170 --> 30:41.850
So...

31:01.470 --> 31:03.590
That's a long time
to be in space.

31:04.470 --> 31:06.210
We'll be in comas
for most of it.

31:06.550 --> 31:07.910
But is that even safe?

31:08.270 --> 31:09.590
Nothing about this is safe.

31:25.090 --> 31:26.070
We only need three.

31:27.090 --> 31:31.570
A pilot, an engineer,
and a scientist.

31:36.190 --> 31:38.570
Commander Yao.

31:41.570 --> 31:43.970
I must have known you,
but I just don't remember.

31:45.070 --> 31:50.230
You make a funny face in
literally every picture.

31:51.750 --> 31:58.870
You must have been very
smart and strong and brave.

32:06.030 --> 32:08.310
First, I owe you
three bags of vodka.

32:09.870 --> 32:11.930
You seem to have
had a lot of friends.

32:13.110 --> 32:14.110
This picture of you,

32:14.530 --> 32:16.130
what looks like
sneaking into the Kremlin,

32:18.730 --> 32:19.290
is

32:19.890 --> 32:20.450
legendary.

32:22.690 --> 32:24.110
I wish you were still here.

32:26.190 --> 32:27.630
I wish I wasn't alone.

32:28.630 --> 32:32.370
I wish I was doing a better job.

32:32.370 --> 32:35.850
I just, uh...

32:38.110 --> 32:39.950
You were both very loved.

32:41.870 --> 32:43.830
You deserve much more than this.

32:46.230 --> 32:50.870
I'll do my best to make
sure that you don't...

32:51.550 --> 32:54.370
You know, that you didn't...

33:05.810 --> 33:07.170
I'll do my best.

34:11.390 --> 34:17.250
Approaching Tau Ceti orbit.
Prepare for engine cutoff.

34:18.410 --> 34:23.790
Fourteen. Thirteen.
Twelve. Eleven.

34:25.190 --> 34:25.930
Pilot detected.

34:26.510 --> 34:28.450
I'm not a pilot!

34:28.970 --> 34:31.790
What happens at
zero? I mean, what?

34:39.750 --> 34:42.450
You are now orbiting
Tau Ceti. Ah!

34:44.710 --> 34:48.430
What the fudging fudger!

34:49.170 --> 34:51.370
Ah! Ah! Ah!

34:51.370 --> 34:55.690
Petrovascope operational.
Petrovascope operational.

35:16.690 --> 35:17.890
It's Tau Ceti.

35:28.890 --> 35:33.050
You have a Petrova line,
but you're not dimming.

35:33.810 --> 35:34.230
Why?

35:45.190 --> 35:46.210
What is that?

36:02.630 --> 36:05.910
Blip-A detected.

36:06.930 --> 36:08.270
What's a Blip-A?

36:09.270 --> 36:10.870
Blip-A detected.

37:16.430 --> 37:17.950
No, no, no, no, no.

37:17.950 --> 37:19.170
Let's go, let's go, Mary.

37:19.170 --> 37:21.430
Mary. No, no, no,
no, no, no, no.

37:22.070 --> 37:22.670
Pilot detected!

37:22.870 --> 37:24.130
Please engage restraint.

37:24.590 --> 37:26.770
Pilot detected!

37:26.930 --> 37:27.610
Getting out of here.

37:27.790 --> 37:28.890
Engage spin drive.

37:29.270 --> 37:29.830
Engage spin drive.

37:29.850 --> 37:30.370
Incorrect.

37:30.790 --> 37:31.470
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

37:31.530 --> 37:33.030
Welcome to the Hail Mary.

37:33.130 --> 37:33.870
Is it this thing?

37:39.210 --> 37:40.970
Erratic maneuver detected.

37:44.350 --> 37:44.750
Yuck.

37:48.450 --> 37:49.150
Oh, no.

38:00.750 --> 38:03.230
Blip-A detected.

38:06.150 --> 38:06.930
What does it want?

38:37.970 --> 38:38.650
What?

38:52.250 --> 38:53.910
Blip-B detected.

38:54.290 --> 38:54.930
What's up with this thing?

38:54.990 --> 38:58.070
Current distance from
Hail Mary is 800 meters.

38:58.070 --> 38:59.310
It's sending me something.

39:02.290 --> 39:03.790
It could be a message.

39:06.230 --> 39:06.910
Oh, no.

39:06.910 --> 39:07.830
It could be a bomb.

39:09.610 --> 39:10.270
Is it a bomb?

39:12.490 --> 39:12.890
Shields up!

39:12.910 --> 39:14.670
There are no shields
on board the Hail Mary.

39:14.690 --> 39:15.310
Why not?

39:16.450 --> 39:17.410
30 meters.

39:18.850 --> 39:19.810
20 meters.

39:20.170 --> 39:20.710
Ten.

39:31.090 --> 39:33.830
Well, I guess there's egg
on both our faces, huh Mary?

39:36.170 --> 39:37.030
What's that?

39:41.050 --> 39:43.570
Why is it moving so much
slower than the last one?

39:47.870 --> 39:49.130
They think I'm dumb.

39:53.910 --> 39:56.050
If we were going to
catch it, what would we do?

39:56.990 --> 39:59.270
Would you like to go on
a spacewalk, Dr. Grace?

40:05.450 --> 40:10.190
To begin your spacewalk, put on your
??? suit and proceed to the airlock.

40:21.350 --> 40:22.750
Yes!

40:58.670 --> 40:59.670
No.

41:01.250 --> 41:02.910
It's just crazy.

41:23.670 --> 41:26.470
Oh, God.

41:58.970 --> 42:01.770
Oh, God.

42:17.350 --> 42:20.150
Oh, God.

42:27.210 --> 42:29.610
Righty, tighty, lefty-loosey.

42:35.150 --> 42:36.210
Xenon's a gas.

42:36.310 --> 42:37.890
I think this thing's broken.

42:44.670 --> 42:49.910
We need equipment to analyze
the astrophage at Tau Ceti.

42:50.350 --> 42:50.650
Right,

42:51.870 --> 42:53.970
Most of this equipment
won't work in zero gravity.

42:54.230 --> 42:57.850
And we have a team to develop and build
zero gravity versions of this equipment.

42:57.990 --> 43:00.290
We would need years for
that, and we have months.

43:00.450 --> 43:01.330
What's the alternative?

43:01.810 --> 43:02.870
We make gravity.

43:03.770 --> 43:04.170
Centrifuge?

43:05.190 --> 43:05.710
Centrifuge.

43:05.710 --> 43:09.870
They use them to make butter
during the Civil War, actually.

43:10.730 --> 43:12.090
It's a fun fact.

44:07.610 --> 44:08.810
Lab operational.

44:20.950 --> 44:21.850
Still Xenon.

44:22.870 --> 44:25.790
Up is down, left is
right, Xenon's a solid.

44:26.390 --> 44:26.950
aliens are real,

44:27.250 --> 44:29.250
I'm wrong about everything
and everything's wrong.

44:34.330 --> 44:36.430
Lefty, tighty, righty-loosey.

44:38.030 --> 44:40.870
I mean... Oh no!

44:41.050 --> 44:42.610
Foreign presence detected.

44:42.686 --> 44:44.092
Foreign presence detected.

45:46.910 --> 45:48.290
You're a long way from home.

46:05.550 --> 46:07.170
I'm a long way from home, too.

46:26.150 --> 46:28.810
Blip-D detected.

50:39.850 --> 50:41.990
Is that me?

51:05.930 --> 51:07.010
I don't understand.

51:10.170 --> 51:21.570
You want me to go
back in my ship?

51:21.570 --> 51:30.150
But I just got here. Okay.

51:30.170 --> 51:38.410
Okay, I'll talk
to you later. Bye.

52:16.070 --> 52:18.330
What are they doing, Mary?

52:48.130 --> 52:50.150
It is not advised.

52:52.110 --> 52:52.630
Thank you, Mary.

54:04.210 --> 54:05.610
What?

54:26.110 --> 54:30.030
Oh my. This is new.

54:42.550 --> 54:43.850
Anybody home?

54:47.290 --> 54:49.550
I like what you've
done with the gravity.

54:56.450 --> 55:03.830
I made you a ship. It's ramen.

55:07.010 --> 55:07.850
I only made one.

55:07.850 --> 55:12.670
I'm not sure how
many of you there are.

56:31.350 --> 56:33.570
Hi. No, no, no. I'm
sorry. I'm sorry.

56:34.670 --> 56:36.670
You scared me when you went...

57:32.610 --> 57:34.010
Oh

57:58.570 --> 58:05.930
Can't seem to see your face...
Mysterious! Faces are overrated.

58:07.890 --> 58:08.150
Oh

58:18.870 --> 58:20.870
You like tapping, huh?

58:51.870 --> 58:56.390
You're pointing! You're
not tapping. Sorry.

59:22.670 --> 59:25.530
I don't have one
of these. I love it!

59:26.690 --> 59:28.210
Thank you.

59:31.330 --> 59:34.610
put this on my head?

59:36.570 --> 59:38.810
Take off my head?

59:40.170 --> 59:42.170
Take my helmet off?

59:43.010 --> 59:44.150
No,

59:49.650 --> 59:51.650
That's a big ask. Oh.

59:56.850 --> 01:00:01.910
This is taking a turn. Thank you for
the... What I hope is not handcuffs.

01:00:03.150 --> 01:00:05.370
I'm sorry about the
whole helmet thing.

01:00:06.230 --> 01:00:16.190
Unfortunately, I need
oxygen to breathe, so...

01:00:16.590 --> 01:00:17.770
Two rings of eight.

01:00:21.970 --> 01:00:22.670
O2,

01:00:26.410 --> 01:00:27.210
you little rascal.

01:00:30.070 --> 01:00:31.550
This is oxygen.

01:00:35.750 --> 01:00:38.970
I still don't think I
can do it, though. Sorry.

01:00:40.210 --> 01:00:44.030
It's just, uh... If I'm
wrong, I'm really wrong.

01:02:06.530 --> 01:02:10.030
It's the Petrova line.

01:02:12.990 --> 01:02:14.330
We're here for the same reason.

01:02:15.070 --> 01:02:16.750
You have a Petrova
line problem, too.

01:02:17.010 --> 01:02:17.930
You need to solve it.

01:02:18.130 --> 01:02:19.090
I need to solve it.

01:02:19.270 --> 01:02:20.310
That's why you made me this.

01:02:24.090 --> 01:02:25.530
I'm going to take that as a yes.

01:02:26.410 --> 01:02:29.050
If we're going to save our planets,
we have to learn how to communicate.

01:02:29.730 --> 01:02:32.450
You know, they say math
is the universal language.

01:02:32.590 --> 01:02:35.870
I thought maybe we could learn how to
communicate. Wait, find out if that's true.

01:02:36.330 --> 01:02:37.270
You see the numbers?

01:02:39.910 --> 01:02:42.250
Oh, you want this?

01:02:43.410 --> 01:02:43.810
Whoa!

01:02:44.350 --> 01:02:45.450
Christmas Eve, that is...

01:02:46.170 --> 01:02:47.090
It's really hot in there.

01:02:47.330 --> 01:02:48.050
Is that ammonia?

01:02:50.670 --> 01:02:52.190
Anyway, that's...
Look, see the numbers?

01:02:52.890 --> 01:02:54.090
they're on the other side.

01:02:54.410 --> 01:02:55.230
Do it again.

01:02:55.870 --> 01:02:57.870
If you do it again,
don't let it snap back.

01:02:58.450 --> 01:02:59.570
don't do it.

01:02:59.630 --> 01:03:00.710
Hold it like that,

01:03:01.070 --> 01:03:01.710
and you look.

01:03:05.350 --> 01:03:05.750
Wow.

01:03:06.610 --> 01:03:07.010
Wow.

01:03:07.990 --> 01:03:09.750
How about something else?

01:03:10.210 --> 01:03:11.510
Look at this.

01:03:12.630 --> 01:03:13.210
Clock.

01:03:14.710 --> 01:03:16.310
We both have time, right?

01:03:16.650 --> 01:03:17.530
These are the hands,

01:03:18.270 --> 01:03:19.350
and these are the numbers.

01:03:19.630 --> 01:03:20.150
One, two, three.

01:03:20.170 --> 01:03:25.770
They point to the numbers. And if you'll notice,
there's numbers there and there's also numbers here.

01:03:29.170 --> 01:03:29.710
Okay.

01:03:33.390 --> 01:03:34.410
It is dark.

01:03:40.640 --> 01:03:58.640
I got an idea. Wait. Don't... Yeah. Don't go
anywhere. Stay. Oh, yeah. Um... I'm Grace.

01:04:01.100 --> 01:04:10.720
I'm gonna call you Rocky. You know, because
you look like a giant rock. Oh. I'm fine.

01:04:22.540 --> 01:04:26.480
Echolocation. Right? You
need surfaces to see. Try this.

01:04:30.120 --> 01:04:31.440
You see the numbers?

01:04:34.240 --> 01:04:39.600
What is that? Is that
good? Jazz hands means good.

01:04:41.840 --> 01:04:54.400
do this. Your version of this is our thumbs up.
No, that's thumbs down. We do the thumbs up.

01:04:55.840 --> 01:04:57.040
It's close enough.

01:04:59.040 --> 01:05:03.040
You want me to wait?
I wait? Yeah. No.

01:05:05.340 --> 01:05:08.920
I'm really, uh, really excited
to be working with you on this.

01:05:08.920 --> 01:05:15.120
Fired up. I'm sorry I'm talking so much. It's just
that I haven't been around anyone in a long time.

01:05:19.480 --> 01:05:21.200
What have we got here?

01:05:32.720 --> 01:05:37.040
It's a clock. I
showed you a clock

01:05:40.380 --> 01:05:44.960
You're showing me a clock.
We're, uh, clock bros.

01:05:51.450 --> 01:05:58.430
Right. Um, I gotta be honest.
I'm not sure I'm getting all of

01:06:07.660 --> 01:06:09.040
Check this

01:06:11.640 --> 01:06:17.140
I thought I might record you. Oh, no, no.
Nope, that's okay. It's just a microphone.

01:06:17.140 --> 01:06:19.280
microphone. Looks like they
say, uh, let's start with one.

01:06:20.170 --> 01:06:26.350
What? Wait, wait, wait, sorry.

01:06:27.450 --> 01:06:32.170
Okay, one, and

01:06:34.010 --> 01:06:38.070
What? Okay.

01:06:39.670 --> 01:06:42.410
So, uh, I met an alien,

01:06:43.110 --> 01:06:46.190
and we're learning
to communicate.

01:06:46.930 --> 01:06:47.550
Let's do names.

01:06:48.350 --> 01:06:49.550
Okay, let's start with you.

01:06:50.530 --> 01:06:50.750
Rocky.

01:07:00.130 --> 01:07:00.850
You done?

01:07:04.470 --> 01:07:08.070
My name, can't wait
to hear this, is Grace.

01:07:09.370 --> 01:07:11.450
What's your word for
my name? Go ahead.

01:07:16.410 --> 01:07:21.710
You know, enough to order at
restaurants, we have about 250 words.

01:07:22.990 --> 01:07:25.090
My atmosphere would
kill him and his meat,

01:07:25.330 --> 01:07:28.850
but I like to keep a wall up
in my relationships anyways.

01:07:29.390 --> 01:07:33.190
He's a mechanic, I think.
He uses a metal form of xenon.

01:07:33.590 --> 01:07:38.450
He can make anything. Look at
this. I'm calling it Xenonite.

01:07:39.010 --> 01:07:41.778
And if I can't understand what
he's saying, which is most of the

01:07:41.802 --> 01:07:44.570
time, he puts on a little puppet
show for me and my tiny brain,

01:07:44.630 --> 01:07:46.690
and you know what?
I don't mind it.

01:07:46.790 --> 01:07:48.612
He's kind of growing on me.
At least he's not growing in me,

01:07:48.636 --> 01:07:50.670
you know, which was a
concern for a little while.

01:07:51.210 --> 01:07:55.390
His sun is dying, too, so
maybe we can help each other.

01:07:58.350 --> 01:07:59.150
Recognize this?

01:08:01.990 --> 01:08:04.670
We call it astrophage.
It means star eater.

01:08:12.190 --> 01:08:16.770
Astrophage on me, star, bad,
bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, yeah.

01:08:17.310 --> 01:08:18.750
Same.

01:08:34.690 --> 01:08:35.750
Why are you alone?

01:08:48.910 --> 01:08:50.170
23.

01:08:52.110 --> 01:08:53.310
Wow.

01:08:55.310 --> 01:08:56.510
What happened to them?

01:09:06.510 --> 01:09:07.710
I'm sorry.

01:09:11.710 --> 01:09:12.910
How did they die?

01:09:38.170 --> 01:09:43.130
There were three of us and
two died on the way here.

01:09:45.330 --> 01:09:48.550
I wish I knew why.

01:09:49.950 --> 01:09:51.130
That was only me.

01:10:05.490 --> 01:10:06.890
Correction.

01:10:32.110 --> 01:10:32.710
Deal.

01:10:38.410 --> 01:10:39.590
Called a "fist
bump," by the way.

01:10:45.090 --> 01:10:46.370
Fist my bump?

01:10:47.130 --> 01:10:48.270
No, it's fist bump.

01:10:50.910 --> 01:10:52.170
It's not the same.

01:10:55.310 --> 01:10:59.490
Exactly. The astrophage has to reach Tau Ceti,
otherwise we wouldn't see the Petrova line.

01:11:04.010 --> 01:11:04.910
Ho ho ho.

01:11:08.130 --> 01:11:09.410
Do we really need
this whole model?

01:11:11.930 --> 01:11:12.570
Right.

01:11:15.850 --> 01:11:16.430
Oh boy.

01:11:17.430 --> 01:11:21.290
You know, I used to have one of these in my
classroom and it was a lot simpler to set up.

01:11:25.550 --> 01:11:26.950
One sec. What? What?

01:11:28.170 --> 01:11:29.670
That is a great question.

01:11:31.230 --> 01:11:33.830
You know what? Try this.

01:11:34.470 --> 01:11:37.690
Why is a schoolteacher
in space? Question.

01:11:39.650 --> 01:11:40.490
No.

01:11:42.310 --> 01:11:43.530
Can't unhear it, really.

01:11:45.010 --> 01:11:47.190
Let's try this.

01:11:47.530 --> 01:11:52.910
No. No need to even
continue. Good. Nope.

01:12:01.270 --> 01:12:02.950
I mean...

01:12:03.250 --> 01:12:04.350
Meryl Streep?

01:12:05.350 --> 01:12:07.230
Why is a school
teacher in space?

01:12:08.730 --> 01:12:10.370
She can do anything.

01:12:11.010 --> 01:12:13.490
Why is a schoolteacher in space?

01:12:17.450 --> 01:12:20.090
Why is a schoolteacher in space?

01:12:21.110 --> 01:12:22.170
That's not bad.

01:12:23.390 --> 01:12:23.690
I like.

01:12:24.150 --> 01:12:29.670
All right. And in answer to your question,
I have no idea what I'm doing in space.

01:12:30.510 --> 01:12:31.450
I don't remember.

01:12:33.150 --> 01:12:36.350
Is okay. Grace find
out when Grace go home.

01:12:39.970 --> 01:12:41.230
I'm gonna go to sleep.

01:12:41.810 --> 01:12:43.750
No understand. Word.

01:12:45.270 --> 01:12:45.570
Sleep.

01:12:46.610 --> 01:12:48.550
Just go like this.

01:12:49.610 --> 01:12:51.010
Died? Died?

01:12:51.270 --> 01:12:52.590
No, not died.

01:12:52.670 --> 01:12:56.550
Just lay here for
29,000 seconds and then we

01:12:57.530 --> 01:12:58.290
wake up.

01:12:58.470 --> 01:12:59.450
Oh, understand.

01:12:59.910 --> 01:13:04.310
We call this sleep.
Okay, here we go.

01:13:05.790 --> 01:13:06.050
Sleep.

01:13:08.710 --> 01:13:09.570
Good night, sir.

01:13:10.410 --> 01:13:11.690
I watch Grace sleep.

01:13:11.790 --> 01:13:13.430
No, that's fine.
That's a little weird.

01:13:14.450 --> 01:13:16.350
I'll be good. Good night.

01:13:16.350 --> 01:13:18.590
night. Not safe.
Eridians must watch sleep.

01:13:19.130 --> 01:13:19.950
That's really interesting.

01:13:20.110 --> 01:13:22.950
That sounds like something, uh,
you know, unpack that tomorrow.

01:13:26.030 --> 01:13:28.590
Rocky watch crew many days.

01:13:30.690 --> 01:13:32.330
Crew not wake up.

01:13:39.010 --> 01:13:40.270
That's where you're gonna be?

01:13:40.470 --> 01:13:41.690
No, it's usually closer.

01:13:42.070 --> 01:13:43.050
On your chest.

01:13:43.050 --> 01:13:46.030
I wonder if it would work
from a little farther back.

01:13:47.130 --> 01:13:48.910
But Grace won't feel
comfortable and safe.

01:13:49.090 --> 01:13:54.550
Well, I, look, I'm seeing
so many sides of you lately

01:13:54.730 --> 01:13:55.550
and it's great.

01:13:56.530 --> 01:13:58.650
Right now I'm seeing
the underside of you.

01:14:03.050 --> 01:14:04.830
I'm a side sleeper anyway.

01:14:05.030 --> 01:14:05.430
Good night.

01:14:08.750 --> 01:14:10.850
So we watch each other sleep.

01:14:13.690 --> 01:14:16.350
Eridians don't sleep
like a human does.

01:14:16.970 --> 01:14:18.610
They seem
legitimately paralyzed.

01:14:19.290 --> 01:14:21.530
If danger comes,
you can't wake up.

01:14:21.770 --> 01:14:22.910
It's a survival norm.

01:14:24.650 --> 01:14:26.730
Someone has to keep you safe.

01:14:43.310 --> 01:14:46.170
My team, I want you to
meet Dr. Ryland Grace.

01:14:47.570 --> 01:14:50.590
He is currently the
world's leading authority

01:14:50.590 --> 01:14:52.130
in astrophage biology.

01:14:52.330 --> 01:14:54.630
Dr. Grace, these are
the three astronauts

01:14:54.630 --> 01:14:57.170
astronauts going on the mission
and their backups for redundancy.

01:14:58.510 --> 01:14:58.710
Yao,

01:14:58.970 --> 01:15:00.170
Ilyukhina, and Dubois,

01:15:00.890 --> 01:15:03.170
our pilot, engineer,
and science officer.

01:15:06.650 --> 01:15:07.670
It's an honor.

01:15:08.170 --> 01:15:11.050
I'm excited to share what
I've learned about astrophage

01:15:11.050 --> 01:15:12.390
and spin drives.

01:15:12.790 --> 01:15:14.890
We have 1,009 of these

01:15:14.890 --> 01:15:16.850
little engines that
could on the Hail Mary.

01:15:17.110 --> 01:15:17.690
And, uh...

01:15:27.690 --> 01:15:34.610
Once the mission is complete, we have
the option to end our lives on our terms.

01:15:34.910 --> 01:15:37.930
The alternative is slow,
miserable death by starvation.

01:15:38.250 --> 01:15:40.830
I want to do lethal injection
with a little bit of heroin.

01:15:41.330 --> 01:15:42.690
I will have what she's having.

01:15:44.330 --> 01:15:49.910
Following on from Dr. Grace's
discovery, we've built an IR emitter

01:15:49.910 --> 01:15:56.290
set to the wavelength of CO2, which attracts
the astrophage to this revolver face.

01:15:56.530 --> 01:15:58.430
The drive then rotates outwards.

01:15:58.990 --> 01:16:06.730
We increase the IR, the astrophage get
excited, thrust the ship forward, and so on.

01:16:07.150 --> 01:16:13.650
This is less than a gram of astrophage, and we only need
a fraction of this for this demonstration. Take a look.

01:16:14.290 --> 01:16:15.030
To do what?

01:16:15.730 --> 01:16:17.550
To melt a metric ton of metal.

01:16:43.850 --> 01:16:45.610
Powerful stuff.

01:16:47.290 --> 01:16:50.050
Commander Yao, I really
appreciate what you all are doing.

01:16:50.550 --> 01:16:51.430
You would do the same.

01:16:51.730 --> 01:16:53.890
I would choose just
not to go at all.

01:16:54.630 --> 01:16:58.250
I don't have the bravery gene
that you all have. Trust me.

01:16:58.450 --> 01:17:02.190
It's not a gene. You just need
to find someone to be brave for.

01:17:17.590 --> 01:17:18.470
Movement detected.

01:17:25.230 --> 01:17:25.630
Hi, Grace.

01:17:26.970 --> 01:17:27.930
You're in a ball.

01:17:28.710 --> 01:17:30.990
So Rocky no die in Grace
atmosphere. I come up.

01:17:31.170 --> 01:17:31.830
Oh, you're coming up.

01:17:32.030 --> 01:17:33.710
Foreign entity detected.

01:17:34.130 --> 01:17:37.130
Grace and Rocky, big science.
How to kill astrophage together.

01:17:37.310 --> 01:17:38.210
I keep going this way?

01:17:38.570 --> 01:17:40.150
This room boring. Rocky,

01:17:40.790 --> 01:17:42.410
science. Save Earth,
save Erid. Good plan.

01:17:43.110 --> 01:17:44.350
What's this down here? Question

01:17:46.190 --> 01:17:47.550
Amaze, amaze, amaze.

01:17:47.590 --> 01:17:48.750
Rocky, what is your
human technology?

01:17:49.750 --> 01:17:52.210
Dirty, dirty,
dirty, dirty, dirty.

01:17:52.310 --> 01:17:53.530
Why room so messy?

01:17:53.550 --> 01:17:55.830
Well, I wasn't
expecting company, was I?

01:17:55.850 --> 01:17:56.850
This room for garbage?

01:17:57.530 --> 01:17:57.810
Oh,

01:17:58.210 --> 01:17:59.650
Dirty. Dirty. Dirty.

01:17:59.810 --> 01:18:02.590
This is the lab. This is
where the science happens.

01:18:02.590 --> 01:18:03.450
What's this? What's this?

01:18:03.450 --> 01:18:04.350
Oh, that's an evaporator.

01:18:05.490 --> 01:18:06.170
What's this?

01:18:06.270 --> 01:18:07.730
That is the disco ball.

01:18:07.830 --> 01:18:09.130
That makes me happy.

01:18:09.590 --> 01:18:11.050
Rocky will build work from here.

01:18:11.050 --> 01:18:13.530
We'll need much room for Rocky
and much less space for Grace.

01:18:13.530 --> 01:18:14.410
What is happening here?

01:18:14.530 --> 01:18:16.990
We go Petrova line. We
collect astrophage. We study it.

01:18:17.110 --> 01:18:18.730
We go home. We collect.

01:18:18.750 --> 01:18:20.150
And you say we.

01:18:20.770 --> 01:18:21.430
I'd be great!

01:18:22.170 --> 01:18:22.390
Whoa!

01:18:22.770 --> 01:18:24.250
Apology, apology, apology.

01:18:24.330 --> 01:18:25.010
Rocky, stay.

01:18:25.190 --> 01:18:25.890
Rocky, new to ball.

01:18:26.010 --> 01:18:26.930
Rocky, my hand is up.

01:18:27.990 --> 01:18:31.290
We can't just show up in a space ball unannounced
and move into someone else's spaceship,

01:18:31.530 --> 01:18:33.510
right? There has
to be boundaries.

01:18:33.690 --> 01:18:33.930
Boundaries.

01:18:34.450 --> 01:18:35.270
We have one mission.

01:18:35.750 --> 01:18:35.950
Mission.

01:18:36.190 --> 01:18:38.170
But we're two
distinct individuals.

01:18:38.450 --> 01:18:38.650
Individuals.

01:18:38.650 --> 01:18:42.190
Both working on our distinct
individual parts of that mission.

01:18:42.550 --> 01:18:42.830
Mission.

01:18:43.630 --> 01:18:44.690
Separately.

01:18:45.090 --> 01:18:47.030
Okay. Where my bedroom?

01:18:47.190 --> 01:18:47.710
Bedrooms?

01:18:48.290 --> 01:18:48.690
what?

01:18:49.730 --> 01:18:51.710
So I have a new roommate now.

01:18:53.810 --> 01:18:55.230
Be careful back there, okay?

01:18:57.130 --> 01:18:59.330
The chore wheel
is pretty lopsided.

01:19:00.030 --> 01:19:01.610
Where on Earth does that go?

01:19:01.810 --> 01:19:02.850
Not on Earth. More high.

01:19:02.950 --> 01:19:03.630
It goes this way?

01:19:03.930 --> 01:19:05.110
All the way out to here?

01:19:05.110 --> 01:19:07.390
Yes. Out pointy. What?

01:19:07.570 --> 01:19:10.870
You're telling me what to do. He tells
me why to do it. He tells me how to do it.

01:19:10.970 --> 01:19:12.210
He tells me when to do it.

01:19:12.490 --> 01:19:14.510
And then when I do it, he's
like, what are you doing?

01:19:14.510 --> 01:19:18.490
I'm just saying you're going to get out
of the ball to get into a much bigger ball?

01:19:19.470 --> 01:19:19.690
Why?

01:19:20.630 --> 01:19:22.210
You don't even use a bed.

01:19:22.290 --> 01:19:25.550
You know you have the, like,
Hellraiser thing that you sleep on.

01:19:25.690 --> 01:19:26.590
What do you need a bed for?

01:19:28.370 --> 01:19:30.210
Don't talk to Armando. Yes.

01:19:30.550 --> 01:19:31.130
Can I help you?

01:19:31.450 --> 01:19:32.170
You're doing this.

01:19:32.770 --> 01:19:33.510
It's a lot of this.

01:19:35.070 --> 01:19:36.910
And then he's like, no
understand, no understand.

01:19:37.230 --> 01:19:39.650
And then it's
like, I need a word.

01:19:39.770 --> 01:19:41.510
You know what the
word is? Bossy.

01:19:41.510 --> 01:19:46.750
I'm like one of the villains in the Superman
movie. I'm just, like, trapped in hell.

01:19:46.990 --> 01:19:48.090
Get me out of here!

01:19:48.510 --> 01:19:50.510
His eating habits are...

01:19:53.930 --> 01:19:54.430
exotic.

01:19:56.890 --> 01:19:58.630
Grapes look disgust when eat.

01:19:58.790 --> 01:19:59.870
How do you look when you eat?

01:19:59.990 --> 01:20:00.910
You look beautiful.

01:20:01.610 --> 01:20:02.070
Show me.

01:20:06.830 --> 01:20:07.970
Oh, my God.

01:20:10.390 --> 01:20:13.670
Oh, my God.

01:20:13.870 --> 01:20:15.170
He has incredible hearing.

01:20:15.830 --> 01:20:17.130
He can see through walls.

01:20:17.970 --> 01:20:20.290
Personal space is at a premium.

01:20:20.770 --> 01:20:22.150
Who is Grace
talking to? Question.

01:20:23.570 --> 01:20:25.030
There's no way you
can hear me right now.

01:20:25.250 --> 01:20:26.890
Can hear. Who are
you talking to?

01:20:27.070 --> 01:20:27.950
You can hear this.

01:20:28.190 --> 01:20:30.350
Yes, Grace say
you can hear this.

01:20:31.350 --> 01:20:34.110
Yes. Oh, my God. Look at
this. Look how far away he is.

01:20:35.770 --> 01:20:36.730
That is where he is.

01:20:36.850 --> 01:20:37.390
Hello, Grace.

01:20:37.510 --> 01:20:37.950
He's right here.

01:20:37.950 --> 01:20:39.530
here. Hello, Grace friend. Okay.

01:20:41.170 --> 01:20:42.330
Did Grace find
sampler instruction?

01:20:42.870 --> 01:20:44.510
Yes, I found the sampler.

01:20:45.170 --> 01:20:46.890
Yes, I found the
sampler instruction.

01:20:49.510 --> 01:20:51.750
He's really smart
about some things.

01:20:51.990 --> 01:20:53.690
Oh, my God. He's got a gun.

01:20:53.910 --> 01:20:54.850
Oh, this?

01:20:55.330 --> 01:20:56.050
No, no, no.

01:20:56.550 --> 01:20:58.110
This to screen in front.

01:20:58.410 --> 01:21:00.190
And now this to that over here.

01:21:00.810 --> 01:21:02.150
Now Rocky can hear screen.

01:21:02.430 --> 01:21:03.410
Please don't point it at me.

01:21:03.530 --> 01:21:04.410
Oh, point over here.

01:21:04.690 --> 01:21:06.430
Yes. Okay. Now over there.

01:21:06.430 --> 01:21:07.310
You can point it at me again.

01:21:07.310 --> 01:21:11.790
But his species doesn't know about
things like relativity and radiation.

01:21:12.430 --> 01:21:13.210
And the rest of the crew?

01:21:14.030 --> 01:21:16.130
In mid of ship there.

01:21:16.270 --> 01:21:16.650
And here?

01:21:17.150 --> 01:21:19.970
And where did you
keep the astrophage?

01:21:20.810 --> 01:21:23.590
Fuel tank's next to
Rocky Workshop, it's there.

01:21:24.670 --> 01:21:27.050
I think the radiation is
what made your crew sick, Rock.

01:21:27.590 --> 01:21:30.230
The astrophage probably
just protected you from it.

01:21:30.910 --> 01:21:32.770
This isn't something
that you could have fixed.

01:21:33.790 --> 01:21:36.590
But I guess together we're,
you know, pretty smart.

01:21:37.070 --> 01:21:39.670
Since we're only going to be able to intersect
with the Petrova line for a few seconds,

01:21:39.770 --> 01:21:41.310
we're not going to have enough
time to get a good sample.

01:21:41.430 --> 01:21:42.770
Too fast. Do puppet
show. Too fast.

01:21:43.010 --> 01:21:44.490
I don't want to
do the puppet show.

01:21:44.570 --> 01:21:45.750
No, do puppet show.

01:21:48.410 --> 01:21:51.450
This is us. We're,
you know, flying along.

01:21:51.550 --> 01:21:54.210
The problem is, because the
solar system is constantly moving,

01:21:54.330 --> 01:21:56.490
the patrol line's going to
constantly be moving, right?

01:21:56.570 --> 01:21:58.030
Am I still doing it?
You still want it?

01:21:58.130 --> 01:21:58.930
Yes, yes. Show time.

01:21:59.030 --> 01:22:01.170
So we're not going to
have time to get the sample.

01:22:01.330 --> 01:22:06.090
No, no, no. Use planet
gravity to move with line.

01:22:06.510 --> 01:22:08.990
You mean sort of like
rest in its orbit?

01:22:09.830 --> 01:22:10.270
Yes.

01:22:13.070 --> 01:22:14.290
I didn't think of that.

01:22:14.430 --> 01:22:15.070
I did.

01:22:15.070 --> 01:22:16.530
We figured out a plan.

01:22:16.890 --> 01:22:18.950
We're going to orbit the
planet where astrophage breeds,

01:22:19.490 --> 01:22:22.450
collect a sample, and figure
out why it's not eating Tau Ceti.

01:22:23.210 --> 01:22:24.170
Who is Grace talking to?

01:22:25.750 --> 01:22:26.890
I'm not talking to anyone.

01:22:30.190 --> 01:22:31.430
I need a break.

01:22:32.510 --> 01:22:33.070
Break from what?

01:22:33.450 --> 01:22:35.170
Oh my God, forget it.
This isn't going to work.

01:22:37.990 --> 01:22:40.030
150 million kilometers away,

01:22:40.610 --> 01:22:44.710
racing along at 162
kilometers per second.

01:22:44.810 --> 01:22:47.170
We should arrive at Tau Ceti E

01:22:47.690 --> 01:22:51.830
Arrival at Tau Ceti E in 11
days, 3 hours, and 14 minutes.

01:22:51.850 --> 01:22:52.350
Thank you, Mary.

01:22:52.630 --> 01:22:53.670
You're welcome, Dr. Grace.

01:22:53.730 --> 01:22:54.450
Thank you, Mary.

01:22:54.590 --> 01:22:55.510
You're welcome, Rocky.

01:23:00.690 --> 01:23:01.730
Welcome to Earth.

01:23:01.830 --> 01:23:05.350
You're in the mental health
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa!

01:23:05.470 --> 01:23:07.490
Careful, Rocky. Look out below.

01:23:07.890 --> 01:23:09.270
The beach is always changing.

01:23:09.550 --> 01:23:11.350
You could go to the
same spot every day.

01:23:11.710 --> 01:23:13.210
You're always looking
at a different beach.

01:23:17.950 --> 01:23:18.470
Trees.

01:23:20.570 --> 01:23:23.310
And you climb, and you
climb to the top, and you

01:23:23.870 --> 01:23:26.130
so excited about us
both getting to go home.

01:23:27.390 --> 01:23:29.670
There's no harm in
pretending for a little while.

01:23:31.270 --> 01:23:34.030
Touch the wave,
Touching the wave.

01:23:35.230 --> 01:23:35.830
Wiping out.

01:23:36.470 --> 01:23:36.950
Hanging ten.

01:23:38.730 --> 01:23:39.330
Oh.

01:23:39.830 --> 01:23:40.630
Big happen, baby.

01:23:41.070 --> 01:23:43.630
In three, Apollo trains him.

01:23:43.710 --> 01:23:46.310
And in seven, he
trains Apollo's kid.

01:23:47.090 --> 01:23:48.310
Yeah, yeah.

01:23:48.530 --> 01:23:49.130
Clutch, clutch, clutch, clutch.

01:23:49.810 --> 01:23:50.870
Clutch, clutch, clutch.

01:23:51.810 --> 01:23:55.230
I say either, you say... No.

01:23:56.130 --> 01:23:59.250
I say neither, you
say... Neither. No.

01:24:01.850 --> 01:24:03.250
I like Earth.

01:24:06.330 --> 01:24:07.450
I miss the fog.

01:24:09.270 --> 01:24:09.970
What about you, Rock?

01:24:10.030 --> 01:24:11.110
What do you miss
most about home?

01:24:12.630 --> 01:24:13.490
My mate.

01:24:14.250 --> 01:24:15.010
Wait, what?

01:24:15.490 --> 01:24:16.450
You got a mate?

01:24:16.850 --> 01:24:17.410
Yes.

01:24:17.910 --> 01:24:19.590
I mean, not that you...
I mean, I'm sure...

01:24:20.170 --> 01:24:21.650
What's their name?

01:24:28.030 --> 01:24:30.350
Name is...

01:24:35.910 --> 01:24:37.490
It's beautiful.

01:24:38.730 --> 01:24:42.090
Grace have mate? Question.

01:24:43.610 --> 01:24:43.950
No.

01:24:45.210 --> 01:24:46.170
I mean, I did.

01:24:49.330 --> 01:24:55.310
But she thought I had my head in the clouds, and
I didn't really want to live in the real world.

01:24:57.830 --> 01:24:59.230
She was right.

01:25:01.330 --> 01:25:03.390
Anyway, now she's with Mark.

01:25:04.870 --> 01:25:05.830
Rocky hate Mark.

01:25:08.990 --> 01:25:11.390
But enough about
me. You have a mate.

01:25:11.770 --> 01:25:12.950
How long you been together?

01:25:14.230 --> 01:25:15.710
186.3 years.

01:25:16.710 --> 01:25:17.590
Like the honeymoon phase.

01:25:17.850 --> 01:25:18.930
No, I understand.

01:25:19.270 --> 01:25:22.270
That's a joke, right? That's a long
time. You've been together a long time.

01:25:24.890 --> 01:25:26.050
It's not enough.

01:25:43.350 --> 01:25:44.330
Everywhere.

01:26:02.810 --> 01:26:05.690
Permission to come
aboard, Captain?

01:26:06.390 --> 01:26:07.570
You're already aboard.

01:26:13.210 --> 01:26:14.490
Did you get your free hat?

01:26:15.150 --> 01:26:18.050
Yeah, I kind of bought them. Oh.

01:26:19.310 --> 01:26:20.530
You don't sing, huh?

01:26:20.830 --> 01:26:24.930
Yeah, I do. I actually sing in
an Eastern German youth choir.

01:26:25.490 --> 01:26:26.290
You're very mysterious.

01:26:27.330 --> 01:26:28.210
No, I'm not.

01:26:28.790 --> 01:26:30.950
I always wanted to be

01:26:32.670 --> 01:26:32.950
mysterious.

01:26:34.650 --> 01:26:36.170
Talk too much. It's my problem.

01:26:37.530 --> 01:26:38.910
Like right now.

01:26:40.610 --> 01:26:42.170
I didn't mean to bother you.

01:26:42.170 --> 01:26:43.350
You don't bother me.

01:26:43.850 --> 01:26:45.270
It is such a weird party.

01:26:46.670 --> 01:26:46.870
Is it?

01:26:47.490 --> 01:26:48.370
Yeah, I was singing.

01:26:49.550 --> 01:26:50.410
Everyone's so happy.

01:26:52.090 --> 01:26:53.370
People are

01:26:53.570 --> 01:26:56.210
hooking up, and they all
know they're going to die.

01:26:57.310 --> 01:27:00.250
Camaraderie helps them
doing their job, you know?

01:27:00.690 --> 01:27:01.650
Not so much me.

01:27:04.770 --> 01:27:08.170
Must be hard having
to ask everybody to,

01:27:09.630 --> 01:27:10.570
you know...

01:27:12.170 --> 01:27:13.530
Actually it isn't.

01:27:18.170 --> 01:27:18.690
Yeah.

01:27:21.170 --> 01:27:23.130
So, what do you think?

01:27:24.190 --> 01:27:25.330
You think you're
going to pull it off?

01:27:25.850 --> 01:27:27.010
What, the whole thing?

01:27:27.730 --> 01:27:28.490
Yeah.

01:27:29.810 --> 01:27:30.530
God willing.

01:27:34.190 --> 01:27:35.410
Believe in God?

01:27:37.170 --> 01:27:37.790
beats the alternative.

01:28:20.170 --> 01:28:20.370
Yeah.

01:28:38.170 --> 01:28:43.170
Just stop your crying,
it's a sign of the times.

01:28:46.170 --> 01:28:54.170
Welcome to the final show. I hope
you're wearing your best clothes.

01:28:55.170 --> 01:28:59.410
You can't bribe the door
on your way to the sky.

01:29:01.210 --> 01:29:08.630
You look pretty good down
here, but you ain't really good.

01:29:11.170 --> 01:29:15.790
We've never learned,
we've been here before.

01:29:15.790 --> 01:29:23.170
Why are we always stuck and
running from the bullets, the bullets?

01:29:26.670 --> 01:29:31.570
Just stop your crying,
it's a sign of the times.

01:29:33.030 --> 01:29:40.170
We gotta get away from here.

01:29:43.170 --> 01:29:52.070
Just stop your crying, it'll be
alright. They told me that the end is near.

01:29:53.110 --> 01:29:57.650
We gotta get away from here.

01:29:58.730 --> 01:30:03.070
Just stop your crying,
have the time of your life.

01:30:05.250 --> 01:30:12.070
Breaking through the atmosphere,
and it all looks good from here.

01:30:14.890 --> 01:30:18.350
Remember everything
will be alright.

01:30:20.170 --> 01:30:28.710
We can meet again somewhere,
somewhere far away from here.

01:30:29.570 --> 01:30:30.070
And that is enough.

01:30:57.670 --> 01:30:59.550
Wish you could see this, Rock.

01:31:00.870 --> 01:31:02.150
Rocky can see.

01:31:03.710 --> 01:31:03.910
Boring.

01:31:05.470 --> 01:31:06.430
This is not boring.

01:31:08.190 --> 01:31:09.050
Name of planet

01:31:09.350 --> 01:31:10.030
Tau Ceti E

01:31:10.430 --> 01:31:11.970
is same name as star,

01:31:12.270 --> 01:31:13.050
plus E.

01:31:13.690 --> 01:31:13.890
Boring.

01:31:14.850 --> 01:31:16.550
I guess it could
be a little more

01:31:17.290 --> 01:31:17.870
evocative.

01:31:21.170 --> 01:31:22.610
Astrophage sampler in position.

01:31:22.750 --> 01:31:23.050
Question?

01:31:23.510 --> 01:31:23.830
Yep.

01:31:24.930 --> 01:31:26.650
Trays are live,
looking both ways.

01:31:27.650 --> 01:31:29.890
It is time-go.

01:31:31.330 --> 01:31:32.590
It's time-go.

01:32:12.250 --> 01:32:14.010
What is Grace doing?

01:32:15.370 --> 01:32:16.390
I'm having a moment.

01:32:45.590 --> 01:32:49.050
You know, back on Earth, if you
discover something, you get to name it.

01:32:49.110 --> 01:32:51.850
You were technically the
first one here, so... Yes,

01:32:52.530 --> 01:32:56.290
the name is Medium Rough
Texture Circle Planet.

01:32:57.450 --> 01:32:57.810
Okay.

01:32:59.230 --> 01:33:05.210
Well, if Medium Rough Texture Circle
Planet was taken, we'll just have a backup.

01:33:06.410 --> 01:33:07.970
Maybe go with
something personal.

01:33:09.010 --> 01:33:09.570
Personal.

01:33:14.550 --> 01:33:15.690
your mate's name again?

01:33:16.630 --> 01:33:18.230
Name is.

01:33:20.170 --> 01:33:21.610
Okay, it's okay. I remember.

01:33:23.090 --> 01:33:25.310
Need human word for Rocky mate.

01:33:28.630 --> 01:33:29.050
Adrian.

01:33:30.970 --> 01:33:31.690
It's beautiful.

01:34:32.242 --> 01:34:33.905
It's the same amount,
both coming and going.

01:34:37.030 --> 01:34:40.537
But if Astrophage is going to Adrian
to breed, there should be more leaving.

01:34:40.757 --> 01:34:41.398
It should be double.

01:34:41.418 --> 01:34:42.260
It doesn't make sense.

01:34:42.861 --> 01:34:48.331
It's either not reproducing or it's
not leaving the planet for some reason.

01:34:54.750 --> 01:34:57.430
Oh, my God.

01:34:57.610 --> 01:34:58.670
What? What Grace see?

01:34:58.850 --> 01:34:59.690
What Grace see? Question

01:35:05.410 --> 01:35:06.410
Life.

01:35:15.590 --> 01:35:18.130
This is not just astrophage.

01:35:18.270 --> 01:35:19.330
It's bacteria.

01:35:19.710 --> 01:35:20.570
It's protozoa.

01:35:20.710 --> 01:35:22.030
It's like cells on Erid.

01:35:22.250 --> 01:35:22.730
And Earth.

01:35:23.610 --> 01:35:25.890
What does this mean? Question.

01:35:27.250 --> 01:35:29.850
Well, if there's a
whole active biosphere

01:35:29.850 --> 01:35:30.990
in the Petrova line,

01:35:31.130 --> 01:35:33.330
it stands to reason there's
a whole active biosphere

01:35:33.330 --> 01:35:34.750
on Adrian, which means...

01:35:38.610 --> 01:35:40.190
there's life on Adrian.

01:35:46.170 --> 01:35:48.170
Oh, Grace! Grace!

01:35:48.170 --> 01:35:49.170
Yeah?

01:35:49.170 --> 01:35:50.170
Life! Life is reason!

01:35:50.170 --> 01:35:52.370
Yeah. No, no, no.

01:35:52.370 --> 01:35:54.370
No, no understand.

01:35:54.370 --> 01:35:55.570
Use your words.

01:35:55.570 --> 01:35:57.370
Life is reason for what?

01:35:57.370 --> 01:36:00.170
Life is the reason for what?

01:36:00.170 --> 01:36:00.670
Life is reason! Life is reason!

01:36:01.670 --> 01:36:03.170
Life is reason what?

01:36:03.170 --> 01:36:06.170
Life on Adrian is reason
astrophage in balance.

01:36:06.170 --> 01:36:09.170
Life on Adrian
makes astrophage die.

01:36:11.170 --> 01:36:12.170
Like a predator.

01:36:12.170 --> 01:36:13.170
Yes.

01:36:13.170 --> 01:36:15.170
That would keep the
population stable.

01:36:16.170 --> 01:36:19.170
Grace, if we bring predator
home, our stars not die.

01:36:19.170 --> 01:36:22.970
Life is reason star not die.

01:36:23.810 --> 01:36:25.070
Why didn't you just say that?

01:36:25.790 --> 01:36:28.790
If, there is some kind of
microbial predator on Adrian.

01:36:29.070 --> 01:36:32.350
It'll be in the clouds where
astrophage breathes. Check.

01:36:33.590 --> 01:36:35.510
Oh! The problem is
this ship wasn't built

01:36:35.510 --> 01:36:36.510
to go into the atmosphere.

01:36:37.130 --> 01:36:38.570
If we get within
five kilometers,

01:36:38.710 --> 01:36:40.190
we'll be ripped
into a million pieces

01:36:40.190 --> 01:36:41.330
and then we'll burn up.

01:36:41.510 --> 01:36:41.850
Game over.

01:36:42.670 --> 01:36:43.350
Game not over.

01:36:43.510 --> 01:36:44.310
I make chains.

01:36:44.450 --> 01:36:45.430
I make long chain.

01:36:45.650 --> 01:36:47.430
I put collection device on end.

01:36:47.510 --> 01:36:49.570
Oh yeah, yeah, five
kilometers of chain, sure.

01:36:49.570 --> 01:36:50.190
Garbage!

01:36:50.570 --> 01:36:51.470
Like this chain, look.

01:36:52.310 --> 01:36:53.830
You can do that? Yes.

01:36:54.510 --> 01:36:55.030
I like fishing.

01:36:56.130 --> 01:36:57.210
What's that?

01:36:57.570 --> 01:36:58.850
Oh! Oh! Fishing!

01:37:00.010 --> 01:37:00.930
Can you believe it?

01:37:02.090 --> 01:37:02.970
It can work.

01:37:03.730 --> 01:37:04.530
Thumbs up, baby.

01:37:05.890 --> 01:37:06.730
Hello, Earth.

01:37:06.850 --> 01:37:08.310
Plan is like fishing.

01:37:08.550 --> 01:37:10.830
We get very close
to Adrian atmosphere

01:37:10.830 --> 01:37:13.750
and lower collector
into clouds with chain.

01:37:13.810 --> 01:37:16.170
Then Grace go on
hull to reel it in.

01:37:16.350 --> 01:37:19.110
If ship not at precise
angle and speed, we die.

01:37:19.110 --> 01:37:19.790
Example.

01:37:21.330 --> 01:37:23.870
We must fly backwards
to keep proper velocity.

01:37:24.330 --> 01:37:26.570
Even though Grace still
have no pilot experience.

01:37:27.230 --> 01:37:29.210
I've been practicing, haven't I?

01:37:29.570 --> 01:37:30.490
More. No, no, no. Left.

01:37:31.030 --> 01:37:32.270
More left.

01:37:32.450 --> 01:37:32.990
It's perfect.

01:37:33.290 --> 01:37:34.030
No. Wrong.

01:37:34.050 --> 01:37:35.630
No. Wrong way.

01:37:35.850 --> 01:37:36.070
Wrong way.

01:37:36.210 --> 01:37:36.550
Wrong angle.

01:37:36.670 --> 01:37:37.170
Bad, bad, bad.

01:37:37.270 --> 01:37:37.850
Good, good, good.

01:37:37.970 --> 01:37:38.770
Good. Bad.

01:37:39.010 --> 01:37:39.810
Not enough.

01:37:39.890 --> 01:37:40.370
Too much.

01:37:40.830 --> 01:37:42.010
I'm barely pulling it.

01:37:42.070 --> 01:37:42.730
No, it's bad.

01:37:42.830 --> 01:37:43.530
Grace rocky hit.

01:37:43.530 --> 01:37:46.870
All Rocky plural. All Earth die.

01:37:47.130 --> 01:37:48.290
We die.

01:37:49.530 --> 01:37:51.730
Rocky has built
Predator Collector.

01:37:52.190 --> 01:37:53.650
Rocky chain spooled and ready.

01:37:54.050 --> 01:37:55.170
Grace pilot training.

01:37:55.370 --> 01:37:56.130
Not as good.

01:37:56.750 --> 01:37:57.730
What think, Earth?

01:38:00.370 --> 01:38:02.110
Hello? They can't hear you, pal.

01:38:02.370 --> 01:38:04.030
What? We're not
actually talking to Earth.

01:38:04.270 --> 01:38:04.930
Earth's too far away.

01:38:05.050 --> 01:38:06.410
You know, we just
record these messages

01:38:06.410 --> 01:38:07.870
and we tell them
what we've learned

01:38:07.870 --> 01:38:09.110
and then when we're done,

01:38:09.190 --> 01:38:10.590
we'll send them
all back in a probe.

01:38:10.990 --> 01:38:13.750
Why not you tell them
yourself when you return home?

01:38:14.330 --> 01:38:14.930
Question.

01:38:16.130 --> 01:38:16.450
Yeah.

01:38:17.670 --> 01:38:19.870
This is a one-way
ticket for me, pal.

01:38:20.130 --> 01:38:22.610
What? We had enough
astrophage to get here,

01:38:22.870 --> 01:38:24.190
but not enough to get back.

01:38:24.630 --> 01:38:25.830
So what happens, Grace?

01:38:26.010 --> 01:38:26.590
Question.

01:38:27.070 --> 01:38:29.490
Oh, I've... I got
enough food to last me

01:38:29.490 --> 01:38:30.450
at least a couple years.

01:38:30.750 --> 01:38:32.630
Maybe a couple more
if I stretch it out.

01:38:33.750 --> 01:38:35.490
So, Grace die?

01:38:35.890 --> 01:38:36.330
Question?

01:38:36.770 --> 01:38:40.830
Yeah, once we're done,
I'm... I'm gonna die.

01:38:43.250 --> 01:38:44.750
Why didn't you tell me?

01:38:46.310 --> 01:38:47.230
It slipped my mind.

01:38:47.910 --> 01:38:48.150
No,

01:38:48.730 --> 01:38:50.130
Grace say Grace go home.

01:38:51.590 --> 01:38:52.950
Listen, listen.

01:38:53.150 --> 01:38:53.710
No, no.

01:38:54.570 --> 01:38:56.630
Listen. I got to meet you.

01:38:57.170 --> 01:38:59.390
I got to do all
this amazing stuff.

01:38:59.810 --> 01:39:00.430
I'm good.

01:39:01.010 --> 01:39:02.650
I've made peace with it.

01:39:02.750 --> 01:39:05.010
What mean? What mean make peace?

01:39:05.270 --> 01:39:08.770
It means I know
I'm not going home.

01:39:09.950 --> 01:39:10.810
I know why.

01:39:11.730 --> 01:39:13.050
And it's okay.

01:39:16.910 --> 01:39:18.290
Thumbs up? No.

01:39:18.670 --> 01:39:19.470
Tiny thumbs up?

01:39:19.770 --> 01:39:23.150
No. We got stars to save, okay?

01:39:29.270 --> 01:39:29.470
Grace?

01:39:30.170 --> 01:39:30.490
Yeah.

01:39:32.630 --> 01:39:35.230
You are...

01:39:36.210 --> 01:39:37.430
need word.

01:39:37.970 --> 01:39:41.610
What word do you need? To
risk self to help another.

01:39:42.430 --> 01:39:42.710
Uh, dumb.

01:39:44.530 --> 01:39:44.730
Grace?

01:40:10.410 --> 01:40:12.830
Grace? How much astrophage
you need, question?

01:40:14.310 --> 01:40:15.250
Two million kilograms.

01:40:21.170 --> 01:40:22.170
I can give.

01:40:25.290 --> 01:40:27.990
I go home six years slower.

01:40:31.130 --> 01:40:31.730
That's too much.

01:40:33.410 --> 01:40:34.650
Rocky watch crew die.

01:40:36.070 --> 01:40:36.770
Could not fix.

01:40:38.210 --> 01:40:39.570
Grace say Grace will die.

01:40:41.230 --> 01:40:41.650
Rocky fix.

01:40:57.530 --> 01:41:01.230
Grace go home.

01:41:10.850 --> 01:41:11.910
Okay.

01:41:34.730 --> 01:41:37.290
Uh... I thought you
made peace, question?

01:41:38.150 --> 01:41:40.470
I didn't mean any of that.

01:41:41.870 --> 01:41:43.350
That's just something you say.

01:41:51.670 --> 01:41:54.270
Thank you.

01:42:00.950 --> 01:42:01.990
Get over here.

01:42:04.710 --> 01:42:05.810
Whoa, whoa, whoa.

01:42:05.810 --> 01:42:07.330
What? What's happening?

01:42:07.610 --> 01:42:08.110
A hug.

01:42:08.890 --> 01:42:09.550
Oh.

01:42:10.230 --> 01:42:14.250
It's usually not something
one does by themselves. Oh.

01:42:14.630 --> 01:42:15.870
Wait, I do the same?

01:42:15.950 --> 01:42:17.190
Would you just get in here?

01:42:24.970 --> 01:42:27.670
How do you know
when the hug is done?

01:42:28.350 --> 01:42:29.370
You just feel it.

01:42:29.810 --> 01:42:30.010
Oh.

01:42:31.710 --> 01:42:32.710
Are you feeling it now?

01:42:33.290 --> 01:42:33.710
No.

01:42:34.170 --> 01:42:35.790
Oh. Oh, okay, yeah.

01:42:40.710 --> 01:42:43.190
We ran the sampler
simulation again this morning.

01:42:43.530 --> 01:42:45.470
Shapiro and Dubois
nailed it again.

01:42:45.550 --> 01:42:46.850
Okay. What about the others?

01:42:48.130 --> 01:42:48.770
They'll be ready.

01:42:49.590 --> 01:42:50.150
I expect so.

01:42:51.150 --> 01:42:52.510
They have a great teacher.

01:42:56.010 --> 01:42:58.330
Can you take a
compliment, please? No.

01:42:59.130 --> 01:42:59.690
It's an order.

01:43:00.190 --> 01:43:00.730
Okay.

01:43:01.130 --> 01:43:01.470
Okay.

01:43:01.850 --> 01:43:03.190
If it's an order, I'll take it.

01:43:03.190 --> 01:43:03.530
Thank you.

01:43:05.050 --> 01:43:05.390
Good.

01:43:08.910 --> 01:43:09.870
What do you think?

01:43:10.530 --> 01:43:11.910
It's pretty impressive.

01:43:14.150 --> 01:43:14.690
Yeah.

01:43:16.270 --> 01:43:17.630
You're... You're good.

01:43:22.390 --> 01:43:24.630
Three days, huh?

01:43:26.130 --> 01:43:26.590
Yeah.

01:43:29.770 --> 01:43:31.790
So... What are you gonna
do for the next 20 years?

01:43:31.870 --> 01:43:32.430
You got a plan?

01:43:33.250 --> 01:43:33.630
Huh.

01:44:24.350 --> 01:44:27.150
Manual mode activated.

01:44:40.810 --> 01:44:41.010
Pull the trigger.

01:45:05.710 --> 01:45:06.930
That's not half bad.

01:45:06.930 --> 01:45:07.650
It's full

01:45:14.810 --> 01:45:16.210
Time to go fishing, question?

01:45:17.110 --> 01:45:17.790
It's now or never.

01:45:29.910 --> 01:45:31.090
3,000 meters.

01:45:31.830 --> 01:45:32.190
Probe signal.

01:45:32.710 --> 01:45:32.930
Good.

01:45:50.130 --> 01:45:51.490
Now comes the fun part.

01:45:51.590 --> 01:45:54.370
Grace go out on hull to
retrieve collector? No fun at all.

01:45:54.490 --> 01:45:54.950
It's a joke.

01:45:55.990 --> 01:45:56.650
Oh, humor.

01:45:57.150 --> 01:45:57.430
Confusing.

01:46:04.150 --> 01:46:06.330
You've got to be kidding me.

01:46:06.350 --> 01:46:07.370
What problem, question?

01:46:07.570 --> 01:46:08.030
It's fine.

01:46:09.190 --> 01:46:11.950
It's just the sky
is slightly on fire.

01:46:16.050 --> 01:46:16.750
Words of encouragement.

01:46:17.670 --> 01:46:19.250
You can't just say
words of encouragement.

01:46:20.250 --> 01:46:22.270
Words of great encouragement.

01:46:24.450 --> 01:46:25.850
Nope.

01:46:44.850 --> 01:46:46.570
Feel that?

01:46:47.210 --> 01:46:47.610
Yeah.

01:46:48.610 --> 01:46:49.110
not worried.

01:46:49.810 --> 01:46:50.250
Are you worried?

01:46:51.410 --> 01:46:51.690
Yes.

01:46:53.350 --> 01:46:54.190
Great.

01:47:07.610 --> 01:47:08.750
Collector is close.

01:47:09.110 --> 01:47:10.310
Move winch into position.

01:47:21.590 --> 01:47:23.790
How long is this
supposed to take?

01:47:25.690 --> 01:47:26.710
Collector should be here soon.

01:47:27.050 --> 01:47:28.530
Yeah, it's here.

01:47:29.310 --> 01:47:31.430
Amaze, amaze, amaze.

01:47:34.650 --> 01:47:36.490
Careful, collector important.

01:47:37.210 --> 01:47:37.750
Yep.

01:47:41.610 --> 01:47:42.530
Altitude warning.

01:47:43.490 --> 01:47:44.270
Oh, hurry, hurry.

01:48:00.310 --> 01:48:01.710
Hurry, hurry.

01:48:16.530 --> 01:48:18.270
Grace, status update.

01:48:21.550 --> 01:48:22.150
Grace.

01:48:24.970 --> 01:48:25.390
Grace is safe.

01:48:26.610 --> 01:48:27.250
I'm okay.

01:48:28.790 --> 01:48:29.370
Good, good, good.

01:48:29.370 --> 01:48:31.210
Come inside with
predator collector now.

01:48:33.130 --> 01:48:33.730
Uh.

01:48:34.970 --> 01:48:36.030
Why not moving?

01:48:36.790 --> 01:48:37.390
Question.

01:48:39.470 --> 01:48:39.810
Warning,

01:48:40.310 --> 01:48:41.930
exterior temperature elevated.

01:48:42.250 --> 01:48:43.510
Must move now. Go,

01:48:52.570 --> 01:48:53.210
No, Grace.

01:48:53.370 --> 01:48:53.910
Bad idea.

01:48:53.950 --> 01:48:54.630
Come inside.

01:48:54.930 --> 01:48:55.970
Be there in a minute.

01:48:56.910 --> 01:48:58.410
No, no, no, no, no,
no, no. Grace will die.

01:48:59.250 --> 01:49:00.150
Can repeat mission.

01:49:00.230 --> 01:49:01.150
Can try again later.

01:49:01.270 --> 01:49:02.770
I don't think the risk
is going to be a later.

01:49:03.670 --> 01:49:04.650
Abort, abort, abort.

01:49:05.070 --> 01:49:05.570
Grace will die.

01:49:05.770 --> 01:49:08.690
No, no, no, no, no, no.

01:49:38.690 --> 01:49:38.990
Grace?

01:49:39.430 --> 01:49:40.350
I'm here.

01:49:41.910 --> 01:49:42.830
Amaze, amaze, amaze.

01:49:42.970 --> 01:49:44.230
Grace okay? Question.

01:49:44.410 --> 01:49:46.110
Well, I'm not dead, so yes.

01:49:46.330 --> 01:49:47.590
Good, good, good, good, good.

01:49:47.690 --> 01:49:50.310
Where is that noise coming from?

01:49:50.350 --> 01:49:51.250
noise is from all around.

01:49:51.710 --> 01:49:53.770
It's loudest at
port side of bedroom.

01:49:54.450 --> 01:49:57.170
The gravity is
tearing the ship apart.

01:49:58.990 --> 01:50:00.070
we leave now?

01:50:00.110 --> 01:50:00.570
Question.

01:50:01.050 --> 01:50:01.790
Leave now.

01:50:02.270 --> 01:50:02.750
Statement.

01:50:14.170 --> 01:50:16.850
Hull pressure warning, warning.

01:50:16.850 --> 01:50:18.410
Hull bending in big
room below bedroom.

01:50:18.450 --> 01:50:19.370
That's the fuel tanks.

01:50:21.970 --> 01:50:23.030
Oh, bad, bad, bad.

01:50:23.070 --> 01:50:23.850
It's not great.

01:50:23.990 --> 01:50:24.510
Warning.

01:50:24.510 --> 01:50:25.450
Okay, okay, okay.

01:50:25.510 --> 01:50:26.470
Everyone, everyone, calm down.

01:50:26.570 --> 01:50:27.550
Calm down!

01:50:31.170 --> 01:50:32.730
Try to keep yourself
together, Very good.

01:50:32.730 --> 01:50:33.750
Stop engine now?

01:50:34.030 --> 01:50:34.250
Not yet.

01:50:34.450 --> 01:50:36.290
We need to get into
orbit or we'll crash.

01:50:36.450 --> 01:50:37.010
I have an idea.

01:50:37.090 --> 01:50:38.810
First, no crash.

01:50:39.230 --> 01:50:40.730
Then, not explode.

01:50:41.290 --> 01:50:41.490
Deal?

01:50:41.970 --> 01:50:42.330
Deal.

01:50:44.290 --> 01:50:45.610
Hold on.

01:50:48.350 --> 01:50:48.910
Now?

01:50:49.830 --> 01:50:50.430
Wait.

01:50:53.710 --> 01:50:55.090
Now?

01:50:56.570 --> 01:50:57.290
Now!

01:51:01.870 --> 01:51:02.650
Now!

01:51:08.650 --> 01:51:10.110
we do it?

01:51:31.050 --> 01:51:37.070
Why ship moving? Question
There's a hole in it!

01:51:37.070 --> 01:51:43.890
Hull breach, portside
fuel compartments 11 and 12.

01:51:43.890 --> 01:51:46.530
What happening? Question

01:51:46.970 --> 01:51:50.750
The fuel is migrating to Adrian!

01:51:55.330 --> 01:51:57.010
Eject bad fuel bay, question?

01:51:58.190 --> 01:51:58.390
Yeah.

01:51:59.430 --> 01:52:02.870
Jettison port fuel tank
compartment 12. Confirm.

01:52:24.490 --> 01:52:29.310
Jettison port fuel tank
compartment 11. Confirm.

01:52:29.750 --> 01:52:32.170
Eject other fuel bay!

01:55:46.530 --> 01:55:50.150
One nanogram of astrophage
isn't enough to blow up a building.

01:55:50.710 --> 01:55:53.770
The photon master gave him
one milligram by mistake.

01:55:54.210 --> 01:55:57.010
That's a million times the heat
energy that they're prepared for.

01:55:57.290 --> 01:56:00.910
A measuring mistake killed
my entire science team.

01:56:01.010 --> 01:56:02.370
Doesn't matter,
we have to launch.

01:56:09.750 --> 01:56:12.690
If we miss the orbital window,
it'll set us back months.

01:56:12.810 --> 01:56:15.670
Yeah, but if no one's trained to
do the mission, it won't matter.

01:56:16.010 --> 01:56:18.350
Casualty projections go up
exponentially if we delay.

01:56:18.350 --> 01:56:21.010
We launch on schedule with a
replacement science officer.

01:56:21.450 --> 01:56:28.190
Okay, but... who? I mean that...

01:56:45.450 --> 01:56:46.830
I'm not an astronaut.

01:56:46.830 --> 01:56:50.730
I don't need an astronaut. I need an
expert on astrophage who's mission ready.

01:56:51.130 --> 01:56:55.610
I'm not ready. I
don't have any training.

01:56:56.430 --> 01:56:57.330
Well, pick it up.

01:56:57.850 --> 01:57:01.630
I'm not an astronaut. I
put the not in astronaut.

01:57:01.870 --> 01:57:05.350
I've never done anything. I've never
done a spacewalk. I can't even moonwalk.

01:57:05.570 --> 01:57:07.310
I haven't done the
whole pool thing.

01:57:07.490 --> 01:57:10.530
No, no, no, this is just for
the picture. For social media.

01:57:10.610 --> 01:57:15.130
I'm not heroic in any way.
I get sick on the elevator.

01:57:15.130 --> 01:57:17.570
Perfect, there's no
elevator on the ship.

01:57:17.830 --> 01:57:19.950
I cannot do this. You're smart.

01:57:20.170 --> 01:57:21.350
You'll figure it out.

01:57:23.550 --> 01:57:26.270
This might be very hard
for you to understand,

01:57:26.770 --> 01:57:28.530
but some people are failures.

01:57:28.730 --> 01:57:30.570
Some people don't
rise to the challenge.

01:57:30.690 --> 01:57:32.950
You've been present for
every major scientific

01:57:32.950 --> 01:57:35.290
or strategic meeting
we've had on the mission.

01:57:35.650 --> 01:57:37.690
You're missing out an
important part of the mission,

01:57:37.810 --> 01:57:39.050
which is the suicide part.

01:57:39.750 --> 01:57:42.090
Grace, you'd be in
very cool company.

01:57:42.310 --> 01:57:44.030
If you don't go, you die anyway.

01:57:44.170 --> 01:57:47.350
Yeah, but I die
in 30 years with...

01:57:47.350 --> 01:57:48.290
With the rest of us.

01:57:49.630 --> 01:57:51.430
You have no immediate family.

01:57:51.910 --> 01:57:52.850
You don't even have a dog.

01:57:55.910 --> 01:57:57.610
So, just so I'm clear,

01:57:58.570 --> 01:58:01.290
you're asking me right now to

01:58:03.090 --> 01:58:04.210
give up my life.

01:58:04.570 --> 01:58:06.010
I am. We all are.

01:58:10.550 --> 01:58:11.990
Can I think about this?

01:58:12.070 --> 01:58:12.950
You have three hours.

01:58:58.930 --> 01:59:00.390
movement detected.

01:59:02.510 --> 01:59:03.790
Good morning, Doctor Grace.

02:00:21.710 --> 02:00:25.690
I'll watch you sleep, uh

02:00:32.050 --> 02:00:36.630
But uh... you gotta wake up.

02:01:11.170 --> 02:01:13.810
I'm not sure what to do.

02:01:18.310 --> 02:01:21.030
I've done everything
I can think of.

02:01:25.390 --> 02:01:27.050
I made him a heat lamp.

02:01:49.990 --> 02:01:52.050
And he left me one last message.

02:03:34.370 --> 02:03:35.610
We have our predator.

02:03:36.490 --> 02:03:43.950
Right now I'm calling it Taumoeba. And I'm sure
that when you wake up, you'll have a lot to say...

02:03:43.950 --> 02:03:48.330
about why that's a bad name, because
it's just an amoeba from Tau Ceti

02:03:48.540 --> 02:03:54.300
and putting tau in front of amoeba. But I would
argue there's an elegance to that, a simplicity.

02:03:54.580 --> 02:03:59.100
Let's not fight about it now.
Let's just, we'll table it.

02:03:59.100 --> 02:04:04.600
I did a test at different atmospheric variables
and fun fact, every time I introduced nitrogen,

02:04:05.340 --> 02:04:06.200
it died.

02:04:06.740 --> 02:04:10.540
And I know you're thinking, well, that's terrible
because that's a problem because we needed

02:04:10.540 --> 02:04:15.560
to survive in the conditions of Venus. Obviously
I had to figure out how to breed a new strain

02:04:15.560 --> 02:04:19.980
of nitrogen-resistant
Taumoeba and guess what I used?

02:04:20.600 --> 02:04:29.120
The breeder tanks that we made with your
Xenonite. And you know what? Now we're just

02:04:29.120 --> 02:04:33.320
a couple of very cool dudes with their very
own strain of nitrogen resistant Taumoeba.

02:04:34.620 --> 02:04:40.500
Really all we have to do now is breed enough
to survive the trip. And you got to wake up

02:04:40.500 --> 02:04:47.300
because I don't know how to get
your half of the Taumoeba to Erid. So

02:04:47.300 --> 02:04:51.780
no pressure, but
we did make a deal.

02:06:11.980 --> 02:06:13.380
Shhh.

02:06:13.960 --> 02:06:14.520
Grace?

02:06:20.170 --> 02:06:22.090
Rock, could you just

02:06:22.570 --> 02:06:23.010
I don't know.

02:06:23.510 --> 02:06:24.310
give me a little

02:06:24.970 --> 02:06:25.770
chance, please,

02:06:26.290 --> 02:06:26.570
to sleep a little?

02:06:42.030 --> 02:06:44.550
Did we find Predator?

02:06:52.670 --> 02:06:56.630
No is yes.

02:07:11.770 --> 02:07:14.050
Amaze, Amaze, Amaze.

02:07:14.690 --> 02:07:16.670
Rocky, Breeder Tank design.

02:07:17.750 --> 02:07:18.330
Good job, bro.

02:07:18.450 --> 02:07:19.470
We can go home.

02:07:19.470 --> 02:07:20.470
Statement.

02:07:22.890 --> 02:07:23.930
We can go home.

02:07:25.150 --> 02:07:26.150
Fist my bump.

02:07:27.370 --> 02:07:27.810
No.

02:07:29.330 --> 02:07:30.210
That's still not right.

02:07:30.810 --> 02:07:31.610
I'll do it.

02:07:31.810 --> 02:07:33.090
Good, good, good.

02:07:33.790 --> 02:07:35.250
So what we do now?

02:07:35.490 --> 02:07:35.970
Question.

02:07:40.870 --> 02:07:41.710
We party.

02:07:55.250 --> 02:07:55.890
Wow.

02:07:57.030 --> 02:07:58.930
Is special clothing
for celebration.

02:07:59.510 --> 02:08:02.650
You're making me think
that I have to up my game.

02:08:03.290 --> 02:08:04.210
What is this?

02:08:04.230 --> 02:08:04.850
you don't mind.

02:08:05.450 --> 02:08:06.570
Rocky get one.

02:08:06.650 --> 02:08:07.470
There you go.

02:08:07.690 --> 02:08:08.410
It's good.

02:08:09.890 --> 02:08:11.170
Oh, yeah.

02:08:12.370 --> 02:08:14.710
Not much, just a
little something.

02:08:15.650 --> 02:08:16.670
Very own laptop.

02:08:16.910 --> 02:08:18.370
My portable earth
thinking machine.

02:08:18.370 --> 02:08:20.610
With all human knowledge.

02:08:21.070 --> 02:08:21.610
Thank you, thank you, thank you.

02:08:21.630 --> 02:08:23.070
And just one more thing.

02:08:23.450 --> 02:08:23.810
Yes?

02:08:25.970 --> 02:08:26.830
What, what's this?

02:08:27.650 --> 02:08:28.270
It's earth.

02:08:30.270 --> 02:08:32.370
So you can remember me.

02:08:41.550 --> 02:08:43.730
Rocky can't forget.

02:08:47.590 --> 02:08:49.110
I didn't get you anything.

02:08:51.590 --> 02:08:52.210
You gave me everything.

02:08:55.010 --> 02:08:59.930
But if I were to
give you something.

02:09:00.270 --> 02:09:02.090
It'd be pretty cool
to see your ship.

02:09:03.330 --> 02:09:03.770
Ooh.

02:09:14.770 --> 02:09:14.970
I love you.

02:10:20.770 --> 02:10:32.510
I understand you think I'm the right
person for this mission, but I can't do it.

02:10:40.790 --> 02:10:42.470
Can't do it.

02:10:48.010 --> 02:10:51.990
You'll find a solution.
You are my solution.

02:10:57.230 --> 02:11:01.430
My place is in the classroom. Stop
pretending this is about your students,

02:11:01.610 --> 02:11:09.990
it's so insulting. Grace, we will lose a quarter
of the world's population in next 30 years.

02:11:10.270 --> 02:11:16.210
And that assumes that the nations of
the world work together to ration food

02:11:16.210 --> 02:11:24.670
which they won't. So I double the estimate.
And if you would truly care about...

02:11:24.670 --> 02:11:27.470
...the children or anyone else for
that matter, you'd get on that ship.

02:11:32.090 --> 02:11:44.850
I understand the stakes. I
do. But I don't have it in me.

02:11:49.350 --> 02:12:00.850
My mind is made up. I'm sorry,
but you just can't talk me into it.

02:12:04.610 --> 02:12:16.310
I'm not trying to talk you into anything.
I am trying to make you understand

02:12:16.310 --> 02:12:19.270
what I'm about to do
next. Yeah, please.

02:12:20.170 --> 02:12:22.310
Stay calm. Come in.

02:12:25.490 --> 02:12:26.710
What is this?

02:12:27.270 --> 02:12:30.630
Mission plan will state that we induced
your coma early to maximize your safety.

02:12:31.110 --> 02:12:32.530
You will be
remembered as a hero.

02:12:33.590 --> 02:12:35.270
Come on. This is crazy.

02:12:35.270 --> 02:12:36.450
I have to do it.

02:12:36.490 --> 02:12:37.830
You're not. Come on.

02:12:38.090 --> 02:12:39.110
What are you doing?

02:12:39.850 --> 02:12:44.250
This may seem like me betraying you,
but it's actually me believing in you.

02:12:44.350 --> 02:12:45.970
It sure feels like
you're betraying me.

02:12:46.670 --> 02:12:47.710
Don't make this harder, please.

02:12:47.750 --> 02:12:48.550
Come on. I'm coming.

02:12:52.050 --> 02:12:54.170
Let's keep talking about it.

02:12:56.630 --> 02:12:58.630
Sit down and we
do it differently.

02:12:59.970 --> 02:13:00.890
Get out of here.

02:13:06.830 --> 02:13:08.050
Yeah, he's running.

02:13:25.350 --> 02:13:35.430
No! No! I can't do it! Don't
do it! Don't do it! Don't do it!

02:13:36.770 --> 02:13:38.290
You know who you are.

02:13:40.470 --> 02:13:41.630
You're going to do great.

02:14:14.730 --> 02:14:16.890
I'm trying to think if
there's anything I forgot.

02:14:20.170 --> 02:14:22.170
Fuel tank fix, okay? Question?

02:14:22.410 --> 02:14:23.690
Oh, yeah, yeah.
They're working great.

02:14:23.870 --> 02:14:25.850
Oh, good. Happy, happy, happy.

02:14:33.010 --> 02:14:34.650
Well, my friend.

02:14:35.710 --> 02:14:37.030
Yes, friend?

02:14:38.510 --> 02:14:42.170
not sure what to say,
so I'm just going to...

02:14:50.310 --> 02:14:51.270
Grace?

02:14:55.390 --> 02:14:56.710
No one to watch you sleep.

02:14:58.370 --> 02:14:58.930
Yeah.

02:15:01.330 --> 02:15:03.750
You are very brave.

02:15:06.250 --> 02:15:08.170
I don't know about that.

02:15:11.170 --> 02:15:14.710
You are the bravest
human I have ever met.

02:15:16.390 --> 02:15:17.350
Hey.

02:15:17.850 --> 02:15:18.550
It's a joke.

02:15:18.550 --> 02:15:19.370
I know.

02:15:20.170 --> 02:15:22.930
I only meet one
human, and it's you.

02:15:23.010 --> 02:15:23.910
I get it.

02:15:24.690 --> 02:15:25.370
It's a good joke.

02:15:25.890 --> 02:15:26.470
Good joke.

02:15:27.930 --> 02:15:28.510
All right.

02:15:34.350 --> 02:15:35.590
Well... Goodbye.

02:15:37.290 --> 02:15:38.670
No understand word.

02:15:40.310 --> 02:15:41.990
See you later.

02:15:42.410 --> 02:15:43.650
But I won't see you later.

02:15:48.490 --> 02:15:49.330
I know.

02:15:52.430 --> 02:15:54.150
How do you say
goodbye back home?

02:15:55.270 --> 02:15:55.650
We don't.

02:15:57.570 --> 02:15:59.170
We do this.

02:17:50.890 --> 02:17:57.070
Journey to Earth will take four
years, two months, and eleven days.

02:18:36.558 --> 02:18:44.931
Contamined, detected.

02:18:51.670 --> 02:19:10.170
Contaminant detected.

02:19:54.290 --> 02:19:55.290
There's a leak.

02:19:57.910 --> 02:19:58.750
The problem is the xenonite.

02:20:00.190 --> 02:20:01.810
The Taumoeba can get through it.

02:20:02.870 --> 02:20:05.290
Probably because we bred it
in the xenonite breeder tanks

02:20:05.510 --> 02:20:06.790
it evolved to escape it.

02:20:07.810 --> 02:20:10.730
I was able to stop it before it
ate all the astrophage on the ship.

02:20:13.670 --> 02:20:15.210
Rocky's ship is
built of xenonite.

02:20:16.550 --> 02:20:19.070
The Taumoeba will already
be in its fuel lines.

02:20:20.370 --> 02:20:23.070
He won't be able to find the leak
because the leak is the ship itself.

02:20:23.810 --> 02:20:27.150
He'll be without
any fuel. Stranded.

02:20:27.730 --> 02:20:29.630
His life support
systems will fail.

02:20:32.330 --> 02:20:35.090
If that doesn't kill him
the radiation sickness will.

02:20:38.390 --> 02:20:41.770
He's looking at a long, slow,

02:20:43.610 --> 02:20:45.490
painful death.

02:20:48.450 --> 02:20:48.650
Alone.

02:21:12.710 --> 02:21:14.030
I can't do both.

02:21:16.190 --> 02:21:17.130
I can go home.

02:21:20.850 --> 02:21:22.170
Or I can save

02:21:41.770 --> 02:21:44.690
I've sent you detailed
logs of all of our findings

02:21:45.390 --> 02:21:48.270
and enough Taumoeba
for you to start

02:21:48.270 --> 02:21:49.830
your very own Taumoeba farm.

02:21:53.330 --> 02:21:54.570
At least I never
have to hear you say,

02:21:54.830 --> 02:21:56.070
I told you so.

02:21:57.610 --> 02:21:59.030
Even though you were right.

02:25:40.170 --> 02:25:42.490
I'm here, buddy.

02:26:05.170 --> 02:26:09.670
Earth, Rocky. Rocky, Earth.

02:26:09.670 --> 02:26:12.170
Hello, Earth. I am Rocky.

02:26:12.170 --> 02:26:16.770
I am Rocky from Erid. I am not
Rocky from movie. No, no, no, no.

02:26:16.770 --> 02:26:20.090
I'm pretty sure they know that.

02:26:20.170 --> 02:26:24.370
I left you detailed logs of all of our findings,
and I threw in a little something else just for fun.

02:26:27.130 --> 02:26:28.590
Hopefully it all makes sense.

02:26:29.870 --> 02:26:31.910
And if not, you're smart.

02:26:33.610 --> 02:26:34.550
You'll figure it out.

02:26:36.310 --> 02:26:40.030
This is Dr. Captain Ryland
Grace reporting from the Hail Mary.

02:26:40.170 --> 02:26:42.170
As the Eridians say...

02:26:59.170 --> 02:27:00.150
Let's begin.

02:27:52.750 --> 02:27:54.090
Good morning, Armando.

02:27:55.570 --> 02:27:56.610
You shouldn't have.

02:28:03.130 --> 02:28:07.130
That's a noogie. I'm coming!

02:28:14.730 --> 02:28:15.790
Why you always
gotta be so early?

02:28:17.290 --> 02:28:20.150
Yeah, I know, and I ignored you.

02:28:24.250 --> 02:28:26.810
Why? I thought this
was a safe neighborhood.

02:28:28.330 --> 02:28:31.050
Okay, Armando
likes the fresh air.

02:28:44.770 --> 02:28:47.170
Can we talk about the water
temperature a little bit?

02:28:48.090 --> 02:28:51.110
It's amazing just that
you've done it at all.

02:28:52.530 --> 02:28:53.250
Very cold.

02:28:54.170 --> 02:28:55.930
And before it was boiling.

02:28:56.810 --> 02:28:57.690
Is there an in-between?

02:29:06.510 --> 02:29:11.290
Please tell the bio-dome
illumination team that it's perfect now.

02:29:13.890 --> 02:29:17.650
Oh no, this is, you know
I'm a sucker for the fog.

02:29:28.250 --> 02:29:29.650
Yapa.

02:29:43.750 --> 02:29:44.970
Can I think about it?

02:30:35.110 --> 02:30:37.950
Good morning, class.

02:30:38.930 --> 02:30:42.590
Okay. Everyone,
take their seats.

02:30:43.630 --> 02:30:44.910
Let's wake up.

02:30:48.810 --> 02:30:50.350
Who can tell me
the speed of light?
